I’ve been listening to an loving the City Between urban fantasy series and have tried to grab the novellas that pop up. I of course, read this out of order, but appreciated what the tale offered. All the Different Shades of Blue by W.R. Gingell introduces wheelchair-bound merman Marazul. When he hacks into a spell protected cafe everything goes wrong….

It’s a routine day and a routine job for wheelchair-bound merman Marazul. Just hack into the protective spell around a café and lace it with an encouragement to spend more.
What Marazul doesn’t know is that his employers don’t feel like paying him.
Or that the person who put the protection on the café has a particular reason for wanting to keep that café safe.
Or, for that matter, exactly who it is who has just entered the café…
This novella falls between, Between Walls and Between Cases. While it isn’t necessary to read the novellas to listen to the audiobooks, they introduce new characters and offer a delightful tale with the characters I love.
Three reasons I loved this story.
- We get to see Pet through Marazul’s eyes
- JinYeong is trapped outside of the cafe watching Pet and Marazul flirt.
- Gingell is a masterful storyteller, and her novels and novelette are complete stories from beginning to end.
The story takes place in Pet’s favorite coffee shop with its tasty treats. We learn why the shop is protected by wards, who put them there and who hired Marazul to penetrate the warding system.
The novellas in this series are a treat and I recommend grabbing them. Even though I read this out of order, I still enjoyed it.

This sounds really different. I’m not sure if I’ve seen these books around or not but the authors name is very familiar. Thanks for putting it on my radar.

I haven’t seen this series, but it does sound interesting and novellas are quick reads and then you can easily decide if you want to continue with the series or not.
I hope you had a good week Kimberly!
