The hunt for a stealthy predator takes a damaged J-Psy to the heart of falcon territory in this new Psy-Changeling Trinity novel from New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh...

Justice-Psy Eleri Dias knows the end is near for her, her mind one step away from fatal psychic exposure. In the short time that remains, she is determined to atone for an act of omission that has haunted her for a long, cruel decade. But that decision not only means facing a powerful changeling wing leader, but also putting herself in the path of a serial killer.

Falcon wing leader Adam Garrett is fiercely protective of his family and his clan. After losing his parents as a teenager in a shocking act of malice, Adam has no forgiveness in him for the J-Psy who betrayed him, betrayed them, at the most painful moment of his life. But the evil that stalks his territory will allow him no respite, forcing him once more into contact with the J he has never been able to forget.

Everything that could've been between Eleri and Adam was lost years ago, a shimmering promise crushed. As they work to uncover a monster, the moment of reckoning looms ever closer. Soon, there may be no more time left for either atonement...or love...

Sophia Rose’s Review

On the hunt of a serial killer, a Psy enters the territory of an alpha Changeling she once betrayed.  It’s only a matter of time whether her own failing psychic shields, the falcon alpha, or the serial killer will end her first.  Or so she thinks.   Nalini Singh wrote another gripping, immersive story set in her Psy-Changeling world.

Atonement Sky is the ninth entry in the Psy-Changeling Trinity spin-off series.  Though, the romance pair are new characters and the plot is a side note in the series arc, the overall world and some side characters and situations make it best to read it in order.

Eleri Dias is a J Psy and works with a criminal justice task force working the Sandman serial killer case.  The serial killer is fixated on Eleri and even sends her personal letters before and after his kills.  She’s lasted longer than most J Psy thanks to her own personal strength and the found family she has with three other J Psy, but Eleri feels she’s in the final days before her psy shielding that keeps her mind intact completely deteriorates.

In an ironic twist of fate, she is convinced her quarry lives in a small desert town in Arizona and the town of Raintree just happens to be home to the wing of falcon changelings led by a man she once betrayed by her silence.

Adam Garrett has lived with a burning anger and hatred toward the woman who betrayed him when she proved that ‘Justice’ psy could lie and justice wouldn’t be served to his parents’ killer.  Now, Eleri is back in town, changed from that blossoming young woman who captivated him into a cold, distant hunter who wants only to finish out her last case.  He wants to keep his distance and hold to his anger, but he still feels the pull toward her.  It isn’t anger and hate he feels when he learns her real situation that no J Psy has ever recovered from.

Atonement Sky is a tender, but passionate and very desperate romance played out against the clock ticking down on the heroine’s life.  This is also paired with a murder mystery which was the impetus to get Eleri back in Adam’s sphere and also provided some of the pulse-pounding moments.  The ending climax was intense and unputdownable.

I loved seeing a different aspect of the Changelings with the first really good look at a bird shifting pack made up of mostly falcons, but also other predatory bird species.  And, there is a cultural element besides the bird nature in that most of the pack have Dine’ blood for their human side.

Adam and Eleri’s relationship started out tense and crackling because the bad memories of their shared past.  I liked how slowly Nalini Singh unwound the tension and healing began as they talked and found a new foundation.  Eleri wanted closure and Adam’s forgiveness, but knew they wouldn’t get a real chance because she would die soon, but Adam’s strong and protective, caring spirit made him want to fight this fate and try for a miracle to save her.  It was beautiful, tender, and passionate between them as a result.

All in all, another stunning series entry that was powerful and satisfying.  Newcomers really need to make this long-standing series a priority on the TBR list and fans have another winner to rave about.

That was fascinating how they figured that out about the mental shields. With you on anticipating the next, Rachel!
