The Deepest of Secrets by Kelley Armstrong is the last book in the Rockton series. Tucked away in the Yukon wilderness, the council is slowly shutting down the town until someone reveals secrets and bodies turn up dead. An exciting conclusion that has left me hoping for a spinoff.

It’s not always easy to live in the hidden town of Rockton, something Detective Casey Duncan knows firsthand. Tucked away in the Yukon wilderness, the community survives—and thrives—because the residents' many secrets stay just that—secret.

But what happens when these secrets start to come out? Overnight, no one is safe. It’s not a question of if your secret will come out—but when.

Casey and her boyfriend, Sheriff Eric Dalton, need to find the culprit while protecting those who have been thrust into the spotlight. For a place built on privacy and new beginnings, Rockton isn’t handling these revelations very well. People are turning on one another, and when one of the loudest complainers turns up barely alive, it's clear that their trickster is actually a murderer.

The threat of exposure is reaching its breaking point, and no one knows what’s going to happen next.

MURDERMYSTERY Small-town SUSPENSE thriller

We are once again back with Detective Casey Duncan and her boyfriend, Sheriff Eric Dalton, in the hidden city of Rockton. The town is slowly winding down. Most people come for two years and can ask for a five-year extension, but the Council isn’t approving those. Casey, Eric and others have been talking about alternate plans.

Armstrong delivered a clever mystery that made it feel almost as if the town was turning on each other and on Casey, Will and Eric. Philip tries to advise them and the council is less than helpful. Someone reveals Will’s reason for coming to Rockton in the middle of town. This causes the townsfolk to become divided. Some want him removed, particularly from the force.

Everyone is in Rockton because they were running from something, but none are supposed to be violent offenders. Only those who need to know are aware of what each town member did before arriving. Who is uncovering their secrets and how are they getting access to this information? Is the council involved? With a fresh murder and clues pointing to Will, Casey and Eric will have to solve this case fast.

I loved the murder-mystery and working the case with our motley crew. I was very curious about how Armstrong would wrap this up, and I think she did a great job. It gave closure but also left the door open for more books or a spinoff series.

I became attached to these characters and the new ones we met along the way. Knowing this was the end made each encounter with these characters bittersweet. I looked forward to a new book each year and this series ending will leave a gapping hole.

The last chapter was heavy with content. A lot happening and some parts felt rushed, but in the end I was left satisfied even if I will mourn the loss of this series.

About Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed. Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.
