‘Fear the north wind. Because no one will hear you scream…’
A family is gunned down in the snow but one of the children survives. Three years on, that child takes revenge and the Snow Killer is born. But then, nothing - no further crimes are committed, and the case goes cold.
Fifty years later, has the urge to kill been reawakened? As murder follows murder, the detective team tasked with solving the crimes struggle with the lack of leads. It’s a race against time and the weather – each time it snows another person dies.
As an exhausted and grizzled DI Barton and his team scrabble to put the pieces of the puzzle together, the killer is hiding in plain sight. Meanwhile, the murders continue…
The first in a new series, Ross Greenwood has written a cracking, crackling crime story with a twist in its tale which will surprise even the most hardened thriller readers. Perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Stuart MacBride.
Greenwood delivered an atmosphere tale that pulled me in from the beginning as we watched a killer being born. A family is tragically gunned down with the children found in a snowy, blood-soaked field. Only one survived. Three years later, one by one, the men responsible are found murdered. The police call him the Snow Killer, but before they can find a suspect, the killings stop.
Now, fifty years later, DI Barton finds a link to the Snow Killer cold case. Has he begun killing again? It was easy to connect with Barton. He’s a family man, and the author spent some time giving us insight into his home life and interactions with his team.
The case was grounded and compelling. The changing point of view, despite being engaging from the onset, caused the story to drag a little until the pieces and what I was hearing clicked. From the point on, the story held me captive. It was intriguing since we know who the killer was from the beginning. It’s DI Barton’s case and the inner workings of the snow killer’s mind that hook the listener.
David Thorpe narrates and did a stellar job of providing the different points of view as he gave voice to each. His tone and pacing enhanced the tale. I recommend grabbing your earbuds for this one.

I love that moment when a story finally gets settled on its foundations and really picks it up with the plot. Interesting to have the murderer known and have to see how the inspector gets there.
