For Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard, there have been worse assignments than going undercover on the set of an adult film. Dodging flaming monkey-poo for instance. Or going toe-to-leaf with a walking plant monster. Still, there's something more troubling than usual about his newest case. The film's producer believes he's the target of a sinister entropy curse-but it's the women around him who are dying, in increasingly spectacular ways.
Harry's even more frustrated because he only got involved with this bizarre mystery as a favor to Thomas, his flirtatious, self-absorbed vampire acquaintance of dubious integrity. Thomas has a personal stake in the case Harry can't quite figure out, until his investigation leads him straight to Thomas's oversexed vampire family. Harry is about to discover that Thomas's family tree has been hiding a shocking secret: a revelation that will change Harry's life forever.
Whoa nelly, Blood Rites proved to be a hilarious, action-packed and revealing tale as Harry takes on a case as a favor to Thomas, but something else is going on. Harry is determined to get to the bottom of it. It felt good to slip back into the world of Harry Dresden.

*Like most urban fantasy series the books share an overall arc and the relationships and characters experience growth that are best read in the order of their release. Each book however contains a complete case that Harry takes on and tries to survive. *winks*
- I love when I am into a series and suddenly characters and connections click into place. In Blood Rite we learn much about Thomas and Harry.
- Harry is becoming a little jaded but we meet Mouse and it reminded me that Harry has a softer, gentler side.
- Thomas asks Harry to take on a case, and despite saying no and protesting loudly he takes the job. Harry lives hand to mouth and is once again broke sealing his fate.
- The case seems simple enough. Protect the producer of an adult film. Harry goes undercover at the studio. I laughed at the humorous situations Harry finds himself in even as he has to dodge danger.
- Harry soon finds himself protecting Thomas. His own sister is vying for him. Butcher pulled me into the story as he connected characters and focused on family.
- I love when an author throws surprises at me. And surprise me he did!
- Vampire, incubus, reveals, old and new characters helped round out the tale giving way to suspense, surprises and lots of non-stop action.
Each book in the Dresden Files becomes my new favorite to date, and Blood Rite was delightful from beginning to the end. In fact, I started Dead Beat as soon as I finished!

James Marsters aka Spike from Buffy narrates this?!! Omg, I’m so in! I’ve seen this series around for a long time and have always been curious but that just sealed the deal! I’ll have to check and see if he narrates the entire series. Wonderful review, Kimberly! I’m off to check the first book out. 🙂

Hi Kim,
Great review – I read the first book in the Dresden Files a few years ago (I got the book at the NYCC) and I should probably go back to the series. It seems to only be getting better. Thanks for sharing.

Ah, Mouse was such a cute puppy. He grows into a very large, but sweet dog. I’m really enjoying my revisit to the series through your reviews. Great review.
