Narrated by Wil Wheaton, Starter Villain by John Scalzi was pure magic, from humor to characters in this standalone science fiction fantasy. A down on his luck man inherits his estranged uncle’s supervillain business, and the world turns upside down. Unputdownable!

Inheriting your uncle's supervillain business is more complicated than you might think. Particularly when you discover who's running the place.

Charlie's life is going nowhere fast. A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan.

Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie.

But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits. Jake had enemies, and now they're coming after Charlie. His uncle might have been a stand-up, old-fashioned kind of villain, but these are the real thing: rich, soulless predators backed by multinational corporations and venture capital.

It's up to Charlie to win the war his uncle started against a league of supervillains. But with unionized dolphins, hyperintelligent talking spy cats, and a terrifying henchperson at his side, going bad is starting to look pretty good.

In a dog-eat-dog world...be a cat.

fantasy Humor scifi well written

I preordered this during an Audible sale and couldn’t wait to listen. I enjoy Scalzi’s stories, whether he is taking us into deep space, a futuristic world or taking us along on a dispatch.

In Starter Villain, we meet Charlie Fitzer. A former journalist who is now a divorced substitute teacher. Living in his childhood home with his cat, Hera. Our story begins over breakfast, where he learns of his estranged billionaire uncle’s death from the television news. The day gets worse when he learns the bank really isn’t interested in helping him purchase the local pub he and his Dad visited. It ends with possibility when he’s offered the chance to keep his childhood home if he’ll speak at his uncle’s funeral.

The tale that unfolds was fantastic and had me laughing from thugs at the funeral to genetically engineered animals, mammals …you’ll see. I adored Charlie from his logic to his mannerisms and how he handles everything thrown at him from dolphin strikes to bombs. We travel across the globe, get accused of murder and hide out in a secret lair.

Hands down, one of my favorite listens of 2023. The book is brilliant and I have no doubt this would be five stars on its own, but you mix in Wil Wheaton as narrator and bam… magic.
