Widow Deirdre Steen has spent the last five years making sure she’s the best chief nursing officer Yukon Valley Hospital has ever seen. It cost her a personal life—and protected her heart. But now her childhood friend, Dr. Calvin Garrett—the one who got away—is temporarily lending his emergency medicine skills to their rural hospital in Alaska’s interior. The community’s relentless matchmaking network loves a challenge, which leaves Deirdre with one viable option: a fake dating pact with Calvin until the spring Breakup Festival and his inevitable departure to his regular job and his life in Seattle.
Calvin moved away years ago rather than watch his best friend marry Deirdre. Now, amazingly, she’s in Calvin’s bed and the center of his world. Yet a woman like Deirdre deserves forever—as well as a man who didn’t finish as runner-up the first time around.
Can an Alaskan spring thaw help two wounded healers thaw the ice surrounding their hearts and fulfill this second chance at love?
Paging Dr. Breakup reads as a standalone romance. The series features a suspenseful arc focusing on the Yukon Valley’s land. To avoid spoilers, I suggest starting with Dr. Alaska, although David does a good job updating new readers.
Diedre Steen has grown up in the Yukon Valley. She married one of her best friends despite having feels for his best friend/her best friend. Dr. Calvin Garrett left Alaska when it was clear his childhood friend had fallen for his best friend. He’s now back to help his ailing father and accepted a temporary position at Yukon Valley Hospital.
A heartwarming romance blossoms as former best friends pretend to date to avoid hospital staff’s matchmaking attempts, creating a captivating story. Yet, past emotions, miscommunication, and undeniable chemistry cause the pretense to feel genuine. I found myself invested.
I loved being back at the hospital, but missed time with the sled dogs. I liked both Diedre and Calvin. Their chemistry felt genuine, and it was fun seeing them open up. The staff at the hospital felt like family, as did Calvin’s parents. His Dad is ornery and made me laugh.
The suspenseful series arc concerning land in the Yukon Valley, in particular the mountain. Our shady villain was back to stir up trouble. While this is a side thread, it did push the romance and allowed us to get to know the community.
If you love small-town romance, medical romances and beautiful Alaska, you’ll want to grab Paging Dr. Breakup.

I like Alaska settings but I’m not ready too much romance.
