A princess is missing, and a peace treaty is on the verge of collapse in this new Veronica Speedwell adventure from the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.
January 1889. As the newest member of the Curiosity Club—an elite society of brilliant, intrepid women—Veronica Speedwell is excited to put her many skills to good use. As she assembles a memorial exhibition for pioneering mountain climber Alice Baker-Greene, Veronica discovers evidence that the recent death was not a tragic climbing accident but murder. Veronica and her natural historian beau, Stoker, tell the patron of the exhibit, Princess Gisela of Alpenwald, of their findings. With Europe on the verge of war, Gisela's chancellor, Count von Rechstein, does not want to make waves—and before Veronica and Stoker can figure out their next move, the princess disappears.
Having noted Veronica's resemblance to the princess, von Rechstein begs her to pose as Gisela for the sake of the peace treaty that brought the princess to England. Veronica reluctantly agrees to the scheme. She and Stoker must work together to keep the treaty intact while navigating unwelcome advances, assassination attempts, and Veronica's own family—the royalty who has never claimed her.
We are back with another Veronica Speedwell novel in An Unexpected Peril by Deanna Raybourn. I love this series from the suspenseful mysteries to the delightful banter between Veronica and Stoker.
Veronica and Stoker’s relationship has become intimate and while the romance is exciting and brings a sense of belonging, Veronica is longing for adventure.
As a new member of the Curiosity Club, Veronica and Stoker are charged with putting together a memorial exhibition for pioneering mountain climber Alice Baker-Greene. When Stoker discovers the climber’s rope had been cut, they find themselves at odds with the Chancellor of Alpenwald.
The tale that unfolds was positively delightful as Veronica and Stoker find themselves entwined in diplomatic problems. Raybourn outdid herself from the charades to the mystery. The secondary characters and cast of suspects kept me guessing.
Veronica has become more brazen, particularly regarding her past. This is in part because of the friendships she has developed and her relationship with Stoker. Stoker had me grinning from his jealous antics to his acceptance that once Veronica gets ahold of a mystery, there is no escape!
While each book contains a mystery or case that is solved, it is the overall relationship between Stoker and Veronica that will have readers wanting to read this series in order.
An Unexpected Peril was a deliciously delightful adventure in the Veronica Speedwell series. You’ll want to add this to your must read list.
