Veronica must find and stop a devious killer when a group of old friends is targeted for death in this new adventure from the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award–nominated author Deanna Raybourn.

Veronica’s natural-historian beau, Stoker, has been away in Bavaria for months and their relationship is at an impasse. But when Veronica shows up before him with his brother, Tiberius, Lord Templeton-Vane, he is lured back home by an intriguing job offer: preparing an iguanodon for a very special dinner party.

Tiberius has received a cryptic message—along with the obituaries of two recently deceased members of his old group of friends, the Seven Sinners—that he too should get his affairs in order. Realizing he is in grave danger but not knowing why, he plans a reunion party for the remaining Sinners at his family estate to lure the killer out while Veronica and Stoker investigate.

As the guests arrive and settle in, the evening’s events turn deadly. More clues come to light, leading Veronica, Stoker, and Tiberius to uncover a shared past among the Sinners that has led to the fatal present. But the truth might be far more sinister than what they were prepared for.

historical MURDERMYSTERY ROMANCE smartfunny

Despite romantic troubles, Veronica & Stoker agree to attend his brother, Tiberius, Lord Templeton-Vane dinner party to hunt for a murder. It seems Tiberius has received a message that includes the obituaries of two recently deceased members of his old group of friends known as the Seven Sinners. Tiberius in fact believes one of them wants to kill him, blaming him and others for their friend’s death.

Oh, how I hated seeing Veronica and Stoker at odds, but it proved humorous watching these two trade barbs, looks and yes, even the occasional kiss. Don’t worry overmuch, the two are simply stubborn.

As for the case, bets were placed, and each was working the case on their own. It seems a vexing reporter lady is also in their midst. The story’s mystery was well done with suspense, murder and a little mayhem. I must admit I was kept guessing, and loved how events clicked into place when all was revealed. Well done, Ms. Raybourn.

I loved seeing the Templeton-Vane brothers together and learning a wee bit more about Stoker’s life. It is always a delight to spend time with these characters and we were treated to some familiar ones. Like a certain pastry chef. My stomach grumbles just thinking about it.

While each novel in the Veronica Speedwell series features its own case/mystery, I recommend reading them in the order of their release. Relationships, characters and the overall story arc enhanced my overall enjoyment of each novel.

I was not happy with this one, while you enjoyed there barbs because they are at odds I hated that Veronica felt that Stoker should just be okay with things and wasn’t a fan of Veronica in this one. This is my least favorite one even topping the last one which I wasn’t a fan off. I did like the ending but that was it, to me even the mystery was a bit boring. 🙁 Glad you enjoyed it more.

I am so sorry. I disliked them at odds. I enjoyed the mystery. Hopefully, the next one is better for you.

I loved this book and while I didn’t enjoy seeing Veronica and Stoker at odds I did think it helped their relationship grow a bit. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

What a lovely review Kimberly! I am glad that these books have worked so well for you. I have been seeing them around and so many loving them. I do like these covers more than most of the illustrated cartoon ones. But this is an author that Ihave been meaning to try out. Should I start with this series?
