Harry Dresden lives! After being murdered by a mystery assailant, navigating his way through the realm between life and death, and being brought back to the mortal world, Harry realizes that maybe death wasn't all that bad - because he is no longer Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard. He is now Harry Dresden, Winter Knight to Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness.
After Harry had no choice but to swear his fealty, Mab wasn't about to let something as petty as death steal away the prize she had sought for so long. And now, her word is his command, no matter what she wants him to do, no matter where she wants him to go, and no matter who she wants him to kill. Guess which one Mab wants first?
Of course, it won't be an ordinary, everyday assassination. Mab wants her newest minion to pull off the impossible: kill an immortal. No problem there, right? And to make matters worse, there exists a growing threat to an unfathomable source of magic that could land Harry in the sort of trouble that will make death look like a holiday.
Beset by enemies new and old, Harry must gather his friends and allies, prevent the annihilation of countless innocents, and find a way out of his eternal subservience before his newfound powers claim the only thing he has left to call his own... his soul.
I listened to Ghost Story and Cold Days by Jim Butcher back to back. I have no regrets. So many cool things my mouth is still agape.
If you love urban fantasy, snark, and nods to fandoms but you haven’t read or listened to the Dresden Files, do yourself a solid and begin them. Honestly, there is so much to love from the humor to the nail-biting moments. Oh, don’t read the synopsis or this review. Spoilers darling!
Harry is back and surprise, surprise, even in death he cannot escape promises made to the Queen of the Winter Sidhe. Oh, and that island with the weird leylines…. bad shit is happening. Yikes! And that my friends is why I devour an eighteen hour audio in three days.
We spend some creepy time in Fairy whilst Harry heals before
The tale that unfolds has battles, confrontations with friends and family, hostages and surprises. Molly has some impressive stuff going on and before it is all said and done, we will ride with the hunt! It isn’t hard to see why Cold Days was a Goodreads Choice Winner. Hells bells it rocked.
James Marsters is the voice of Harry and these characters. He adds an extra level of enjoyment to an already brilliant story.
The ending left me wanting to dive into the next book and so I did. I finished the series in May during the Finish A Series in A Month Challenge
Cold Days by Jim Butcher was another jaw dropping installment in the #DresdenFiles Best devoured on #audio it's time to hunt! #loveaudiobooks #UrbanFantasy Share on X
Mary @StackingMyBookShelves!
I can’t believe you are up to #14 and I haven’t even started yet. I have to get my butt in gear! You are making us all look bad. Glad you are loving the series. I can’t wait to start them!

Such a good book! I love the Dresden Files series and they are great on audiobook too. I can’t wait for Peace Talks (fingers crossed for 2020)! I think Changes has to be my favourite book but Turn Coat is amazing too, as to be fair are all of the later books!
Olivia Roach
I think the fact about them dying and then coming back is very much a Sherlock Holmes inspired thing to do. I am glad you enjoyed reading these two back to back and were able to love them just as much as usual!
Crystal @ Lost in Storyland
I’ve heard great things about the Dresden Files and purchased the first two books. I need to pick them up! So glad to hear you’re enjoying this series 🙂

And I thought his first few capers were bad enough, this beats Atticus by a mile
Lindy@ A Bookish Escape
I love Urban Fantasy and snark! It looks like I’m going to have to check out this series! Wonderful Review Kim!
Anne - Books of My Heart
I love every one of these Harry Dresden books and had to buy them all on audio. They were some of my first audible purchases. Excellent review! The only problem of being caught up is being desperate for more.
Stormi Johnson
Man, you just zoomed past me on this series…lol. I am currently listening to Small Favors so just kind of skimmed this. 🙂
Dani @ Perspective of a Writer
I enjoy Jim Butcher but I need to make more time for his books. Like other urban fantasy I let YA squeeze them out. Sounds like the narrator really made the reading for you. James Marsters sounds familiar. ❤️

Hi Kim, I haven’t heard of this author. Love his bio-LOL.. This sounds like one I could delve into. I’ve just tried my first audio book! Thanks for sharing your review. Although I was careful not to read spoilers cuz I’ll have to start with #1.
Katherine @ I Wish I Lived in a Library
Another urban fantasy series that I desperately need to read. I just got an audible credit so I might have to get the first Dresden Files book

A friend at work raves about Butcher’s writing. I’ve always said I’ll read him one day, but his extensive list of works can be a bit intimidating. Where do I even begin?
Kimberly
Book one of the Dresden Files… It took me about a year to listen to the audio series, which includes all the novellas bundled into I think 2 audios. Totally worth it!
Nadene
Great, another hit for you.
Melliane
That’s great! Another good one for you!

ok holy cow 18hrs in 3 days. Is that a record for you Kim? And after reading your review for Ghost Story your reading the next right away does not surprise me. yes this series hits all my buttons and is on my list 🙂 Fantastic review, if this doesn’t make readers or listeners run to order this series nothing will
Jackie
I have to agree with your jaw-dropping synopsis 🙂 I really loved this novel but don’t @ me for not finishing the series :p I didn’t read them in order. I tried. There have been so many times I wanted to buy Shadowed Souls but just refused. I would like to start where I left off which is book 7. I have read book 13, 14, 15. though which leaves, Brief Cases ( 15.1), Peace Talks, and Mirror, Mirror. Oh, the agony.- of my wallet. I should be more thrifty and get them from the library but more often than not , the library doesn’t care about the order either :/
Kimberly
I listened to all of them. I think the first few I grabbed as Kindle deals and then upgraded to Audio and a huge savings, then I used all of my credits and grabbed them all., Totally worth it
