Sometimes, the worst day of your life happens, and you have to figure out how to live after it.
So Clementine forms a plan to keep her heart safe: work hard, find someone decent to love, and try to remember to chase the moon. The last one is silly and obviously metaphorical, but her aunt always told her that you needed at least one big dream to keep going. And for the last year, that plan has gone off without a hitch. Mostly. The love part is hard because she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone—she isn’t sure her heart can take it.
And then she finds a strange man standing in the kitchen of her late aunt’s apartment. A man with kind eyes and a Southern drawl and a taste for lemon pies. The kind of man that, before it all, she would’ve fallen head-over-heels for. And she might again.
Except, he exists in the past. Seven years ago, to be exact. And she, quite literally, lives seven years in his future.
Her aunt always said the apartment was a pinch in time, a place where moments blended together like watercolors. And Clementine knows that if she lets her heart fall, she’ll be doomed.
After all, love is never a matter of time—but a matter of timing.
Clementine was very close to her aunt, and it reminded me of my relationship with my grandmother. The two would travel together and filled their passports. Clementine would spend time with her and paint with watercolors in the bathroom, where the light was best. When her aunt dies, it leaves a hole, but her aunt left her the New York apartment.
Clementine is still unpacking boxes when a stranger opens the apartment door. His name is Iwan, and he has a letter from his aunt saying he was welcome to use the apartment while she was away. But her aunt has been dead for over six months. Clementine remembers stories her Aunt Analea told her about the apartment. Is it possible? Is Iwan from the past?
Iwan is an aspiring chef, who traveled to New York to work in some of the best kitchens. He wants to make his grandfather proud. He cooked for Clementine who he nicknames Lemon. I loved all the food talk from experiences to desserts.
The story that unfolds was wonderful. From food shared in the kitchen to a slow burning romance that made me swoon. It seems Iwan is from seven years in her past and they keep having stolen moments until they collide in the present.
I loved the magic of the apartment and the truths we discover. We saw character growth, healing, rediscovery, and reinventions of self. The book balances between the love Clementine shared with her aunt and the budding romance between Lemon and Iwan.
Rich prose, and wonderful quotes like “If you don’t fit in, fool everyone until you do. Keep your passport renewed and Always, Always Chase the Moon!” Which were shared by her aunt transported me. It was a heartwarming tale that made me laugh, cry and believe.
The Seven Year Slip is the perfect romance novel to take with you on vacation.
