Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

thriller SUSPENSE twisted Standalone

I’ve enjoyed Colleen Hoover’s romances, but as many of you know I haven’t been craving the genre lately. I have been devouring thrillers, fantasies, suspense, and murder-mysteries! Such is the life of a fickle reader. However, early reviews dubbed this a mind-fuck and declared, “What the hell did I just read?!?” I decided I would eventually read it.

When Amazon offered  3 months of Kindle Unlimited for 99 cents, I jumped, The first book I grabbed was Verity. Yes, this is available on KU. Brilliant move on Hoover’s part.  I am so glad I ignored the romantic elements and dove in. I hope you grab it too.

Caffeinated Reasons to Read Verity

  • A forbidden romance. While I wasn’t keen on a romance, I don’t regret it.
  • Hoover as a suspense-thriller writer -EPIC. This needs to be an audiobook!
  • Hells yes she and K.A. Tucker need to write a book together but a suspenseful, twisted one!
  • The protagonist, Lowen Ashleigh, is a successful, yet humble writer. In her personal life she has recently come from a dark place. Hoover made her feel vulnerable and genuine.
  • Jeremy Crawford, husband of best-selling author Verity Crawford has had it all and lost it all. He is a wonderful father and loyal husband. You’ll want to comfort him, then question him.
  • The setting lent itself perfectly to the tale that unfolds and with subtle foreshadowing and chilling discoveries. As I sit here reflecting I am thinking I want to do a re-read.
  • Hoover explores tragedy, opportunity, and sin, not to mention a few others… but alas spoilers.
  • I confess I become completely caught up in the story that unfolds. The home has a sinister feel, and comments made by the five-year-old boy sent shivers up my spine.
  • The things that went on in the writer’s office…. words written, secrets told. What the bloody hell? It was addictive, horrifying, and at time chilling.
  • The whole story built until the climatic ending before Hover takes us down a rabbit hole from which there is no return.
  • This story left me mind-fucked.

Read it. Then come tell me what you think.

Well Kimberly that’s one I don’t want to try and I don’t know why …. maybe the five year old giving you chills? LOL

  2. Lorna

I read this back in December and it knocked me for a loop for sure. Totally not her norm. And while I love her norm. this one blew me away. I can see it made into a movie easily. Glad you loved it as much as I did!

I’ve heard amazing things about Verify. K have yet to read Colleen Hoover’s work, so this might be the first I picl up since I’m on a thriller kick lately.

    Great review!

hahahaha sorry Kim I’m not laughing AT you but you made me LMAO with that “mind-fucked” I don’t think I have ever read you swearing before and I want to read the book so badly JUST because it made you swear LOL
I totally love CoHo writing so I believe you! 🙂

It sounds like this one really is a mind bender and that is what I need in my life! I have heard great things about Hoover’s books too and even though I do love my romances I rarely pick them up by her for some reason. I will have to try her thriller writing though because this one sounds spectacular.

I love your reasons to read this one. I actually have this on my TBR and I am glad to know it is available on KU. I have no excuse now, except maybe too many books and not enough time.

Great review! I love CoHo, but this one struck me as pretty different for her. Glad to hear it was extremely satisfying, Though, I am not surprised you were left in that state. There’s a reason we call it get CoHoed. LOL

Oh my goodness! This one sounds as if it should come with a health warning… Thank you for a riveting review:))

Oh wow! I’ve never been drawn to her books before, but this ones sounds very different from the rest. And its on KU! I need to hustle through Mercy K series before my trial runs out and maybe there is time for this one, too.

Oh, yes, a mind fuck for sure! I liked it more than the romance books…and it was one of my two favorite books for January. I’m glad you loved it, too. Thanks for the great review.

Outstanding review! I share your current moody genre of preferring the thrillers/mystery to romance (although I am doing fine with a short romance dalliance for Valentine’s Day with a few favorite authors.) I have to be very careful about my romance picks right now.

I also have the KU deal so I will have to go pick this one. I have a long, long list of KU want to reads though. Sigh.

I still don’t know how I feel about this story. That ending was so….I don’t even. Glad you enjoyed this Kim! It was quite different from her norm, in a good way but a totally messed up way as well.

I still need to read something by Colleen Hoover, and I think I might start here because I LOVE a good mystery. Glad to hear you really enjoyed this one.

Awesome review, Kim! I read this one a week or two ago and haven’t been able to formulate a review yet. My mind was reeling after I finished it and I’m still thinking “What in the world can I say about it?” I definitely don’t want to spoil anything! I so agree that Colleen nailed the whole thriller aspect and I hope she’ll write more!
