I'm Shimmer, a blue dragon shifter. Thanks to a mistake, I was exiled from the Dragon Reaches and sentenced to work for gorgeous, exasperating Alex Radcliffe, a vampire who owns the Fly by Night Magical Investigations Agency. Every time I turn around, somebody's trying to kill us. But you know what they say: All's fair in love and bounty hunting...

A serial killer is stalking the elderly Fae of Seattle, draining their bank accounts before brutally murdering them. When Chase Johnson asks for our help, Alex and I discover that the sociopath is also a doppelganger—able to change shape to match his victim's deepest desires. Our friend and colleague Bette volunteers to act as bait, but the plan goes dangerously awry. Now, unless we find her first, she's about to face her worst nightmare.

Flight from Mayhem by Yasmine Galenorn is the second novel in the Fly by Night urban fantasy series. While I enjoyed Flight from Death, I was rewarded with a stronger story in Flight of Mayhem. Dragons, murder, supernatural creatures, snark and more made this an addictive read.

There is an overlying ARC about Shimmer, a blue dragon exiled from the Dragon Reaches and sent Earthside to Seattle. For that reason, I recommend reading this series in order.

Shimmer works for Alex Radcliffe, a vampire who owns the Fly by Night Magical Investigation Agency.

With a cast full of supernatural creatures we solve cases, watch our protagonist grow and get a little side dish of romance to warm our toes.

Galenorn continues to flesh out these characters and I found myself quite attached to this unusual crew. Bette the snake-shifter continues to make me laugh; even as she gets herself into trouble. Ralph has some issues with his pack and a friend from the last book needs help. Chai the jinn and Shimmer’s roommate continues to aid them.  He has some killer abilities and I enjoy the jabs between him and Alex.

Chase Johnson asks Alex and his agency for help when elderly FAE in Seattle start showing up dead and missing body parts. The case was fascinating and introduced us to some unique FAE. This serial killer is downright scary and could be anyone adding a sense of unease to the tale. Poor Bette ends up involved creating some intense scenes as they race to thwart a killer. Other cases are worked simultaneously and featured a young witch who lets a creäture loose in our world, a ghost living across the street from Shimmer and a friend of Shimmer’s we met in the previous book who may have a stalker.

If you remember I was not very sweet on Alex in Flight from Death, but he turned things around. He was actually kind of adorkable. Watching their romance develop through Shimmer’s eyes was fun, but I am happy this thread was served as a side dish allowing me to enjoy the investigation.

This series is perfect for fans of mystery wrapped in paranormal aspects. The crew kind of reminds me of Scooby Doo and his gang except we have a dragon, werewolf, jinn, and shifter working to solve mysteries.

Flight from Mayhem delivered an action-packed tale with characters and supernatural characters that kept me entertained and craving more! I love this author’s ability to grab you from the very first page and immerse you into the world. The pacing, threads and world building are all developed while delivering cases that were addictive.

Flight from Mayhem by Yasmine Galenorn is filled with mystery, snark, murder & supernatural creatures. Click To Tweet

Currently reading so probably shouldn’t of read your review, but you are solid on keeping them spoiler free. I’m not sure I’m a Shimmer fan yet. After the chapter I just read though, I think she’s finally gaining ground in my book. I’m excited that so many of them from the previous book are together again and there is so much for them to work on!

I love that you described them as the Scooby Doo gang — that means it comes with a healthy dose of humour, and I love any author who can pull that off!

  3. Heidi

I love a good UF series, and the Scooby Doo aspect and the snake shifter intrigue me.

I’ve only read a novella by Galenorn and was only mildly drawn in so haven’t rushed for her other books, but this series actually sounds more to my interests. I love that they are an investigation firm and she’s a dragon. The whole cast of characters together sounds great. I’ll try to snag the first book.

This is an author that I really want to try. I think I said that when you reviewed book one. I need to see if these are available on audio and who the narrator is. It sounds like a really great series.

I love a good adorkable character and I also like when an author is able to redeem an unlikable character. To me that always says a lot about the author’s writing. I have Galenorn on my Authors to Try list but I don’t remember why. Maybe an earlier series sounded like one I’d enjoy because she’s been there for years. This sounds good and I’ll have to track down the first one!

Darn it! I just went to Overdrive to see if my library has the first book. Bummer. I’m going to keep an eye out for this series. Great review!

I love the sound of this series! It reminds me a little of early Anita Blake books. Definitely a series I’ll want to try!!

I almost grabbed the first book last week, but got torn on whether to start with the Otherworld series first or not. Tell me what to do, Wise One! 😛
