If you are a frequent visitor here at Caffeinated, then you know I love Dannika Dark and the Mageriverse she has created. Heartless is the ninth book in the Crossbreed series featuring Raven and Keystone. Suspenseful, hot, and twisted Heartless was an addictive installment.
If you’ve never read/listen to Dark, I recommend you begin with the Mageri series, then Crossbreed before meeting the wolves in the Seven series. Characters in the Mageri series appear in the Crossbreed series. All three series take place in the same world. Got it?
A little time has passed and things are well within the walls of Keystone. Raven is looking for a little excitement when she’s assigned an undercover gig at a bar. Her goal is to gain entry to an illegal fighting circuit. Christian is on another assignment which I will leave you to discover. You won’t be happy and if you are anything like me, you’ll be seeing red. My lips are sealed. Spoilers darling.
Raven’s Dad and Christian…. what a hoot! They both love Raven, but their back and forth is hilarious. We also see a minor scuffle between Christian and a wolf. Raven and Christian managed some alone time which melted my ears and left me grinning.
The case Raven was working was an interesting one, especially given Raven’s past. It involved the darker side of the breed world. It held my interest and Raven was quick on her feet. The team had her back, which I appreciated.
However, a second thread stole my attention and had me in fits as the suspense mounted. This could have been the cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers. Thank the Gods Dark set us down in a place I can live with, even if like Christian I am quite vexed.
Nicole Poole narrates and she brought the characters, their emotions and the storyline to life. I love her voice for Christian. Swoon. She nails the members of Keystone from accent to snark.
I tried to savior but ended up devouring it. Why? Why do I do this to myself? I love these characters and cannot wait for the next installment.
