Betty Dawsey knows that breaking things off with Thom Lange is for the best. He’s nice, but boring, and their relationship has lost its spark. But steady and predictable Thom, suddenly doesn’t seem so steady and predictable when their condo explodes and she’s kidnapped by a couple of crazies claiming that Thom isn’t who he says he is.

Thom is having a hellish week. Not only is he hunting a double agent, but his fiancé dumped him, and thanks to his undercover life, she’s been kidnapped.

Turns out Thom is Operative Thom and he’s got more than a few secrets to share with Betty if he’s going to keep her alive. With both their lives on the line, their lackluster connection is suddenly replaced by an intense one. But in his line of work, feelings aren’t wanted or desired. Because feelings can be a lethal distraction.

ROMANCE snarky SUSPENSE Standalone

First, I did not one-click this book because the dude on the cover reminded me of Keanu Reeves. ? Ok, so maybe I did! ? But, I love romantic suspense and I wanted to try this author. Plus the synopsis grabbed me. ‘Nough said.

When the story opens, Betty is in the process of leaving Thom, her fiance’ a Dear John letter. Despite trying to talk to him, his job and their lackluster relationship has her rethinking the whole marriage proposal. Just as she leaves the entire condo blows-up and she finds herself kidnapped. Thom’s a boring insurance inspector? I think not because, things just got interesting.

Suspense, snark, guns, and chemistry had me devouring Lies, in a single evening. Betty was a hoot, and Thom well, he was a little rough around the edges. I struggled with him a little, but Scott allowed us to see glimpses of sweetness and he certainly wasn’t hard on the eyes. Oh, he will mess up, trust me, but the ride to our HEA was filled with shoot-outs, hot kisses, steamy showers and plenty of sass.

If you like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, you’ll want to grab Lies. This was a fun, standalone romantic suspense with plenty of twists that will hook you, piss you off, and make you laugh but ultimately leave you smiling.

I was lucky enough to meet Kylie Scott at Book Bonanza and look forward to discovering more of her books.

So glad you liked it, but I can’t believe you hadn’t read her before? I’ve been reading her from her first series years ago. Stage Dive series is so much fun and so is her Dive Bar series. Recently read It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time stand-alone too. I hope you get to try some of those. And you are right, I can’t look at that cover without thinking about Keanu!

I confess. I clicked because I thought the guy was Keanu Reeves too 🙂 But then I realized he never made a movie called Lies before did he? Nope. I loved Mr. and Mrs. Smith but I am concerned I won’t like the guy now ;(

OK I was thinking about this one. It’s easier to do as a stand alone. I enjoy this author but I’m still working on the Dive Bar / Stage Dive series. Great review!
