Welcome to another edition of Nonna’s Corner where I share books I’ve read with my grandchildren Sophia and Clayton, affectionately referred to as the Royals. Today imaginations soar as an ordinary young boy has an extraordinary day in A Boy like You and Me, written by Eva Maria Schwarz-Pretner and illustrated by Fatima Aldarmaki. Grab a cup and enjoy!

A boy struggles with everyday calamities, when he realises that any wish he makes comes true. Caught up in the events he fails to notice that something is lost on the way, something that is more important than anything else in the world. Will he be able to undo his wishes?
A Boy like You and Me, written by Eva Maria Schwarz-Pretner and illustrated by Fatima Aldarmaki shares the story of an ordinary boy having a regular day until he makes wishes. It all begins at the cinema where he is very excited to watch a movie. Only a large woman seated in front of him is blocking his view. A simple wish said aloud soon gives the boy a long neck like a giraffe. Imagine his surprise when he can see! We then spend the afternoon with the young boy as he makes simple wishes, one’s children make every day. Sophia is three and a half, and she loved the illustrations and story. In fact, after our initial read-through, she had me read it over and over again. While the story is fun and imaginative, the ending reminds us that we are perfect just the way we are. The story has a wide range of vocabulary and perfect for an early reader. This is a story that would do well for a group storytime. It reads in such a way that you can pause and ask questions. For example, Sophia and I talked about what other animals could fly.

I love this concept. Any wish he wants comes true but loses something. It’s like that old saying – becareful what you wish for. Cute idea for a book. Great review.
