Birpus & Bulbus is a new picture book series chronicling the whimsical adventures of two Tree Wee Brothers living in The Forest of Fine Repute. In The Sour Milk Dragon, Birpus and Bulbus discover how a small act of kindness transforms fear into friendship. Follow Birpus and Bulbus and their Grand Wees, Nester Nook and Granny Cranny, on a magical journey of acceptance, love and family.
The Sour Milk Dragon is illustrated by Indre Ta and my grandchildren said from the cover it looked like we were going on an adventure and indeed from the very first page Birpus & Bulbus his younger brother are chased by a dragon who spews, hot, sour milk. My grandson thought that was disgusting. My youngest grandchild was excited by a dragon and the oldest wanted to know more about the Forest and Nobby Lol-lolly. Indeed, we all settled in for the telling.
The children loved the forest tree village with its tiny homes. We all loved the Grand Wees- Nester Nook and Granny Cranny, who were raising the boys. Delightful screams ensued when Granny made a fresh pot of caterpillar coffee and weenut toast. This was a wonderful introduction to fantasy worlds and adventure.
I loved that the story that unfolds shares the love of family, while also showing how we can misunderstand those who differ from us and that we might discover a wonderful friendship.
The story is simplist with fun unfamiliar words. Each page had just a few sentences, but the pictures opened up to a wonderful world. After we closed the book, we drew pictures of the tree homes, friends and some strange sounding food like worm waffles and cricket cake.
