Few things in life can come between a grim reaper and her coffee, but the sexy, sultry son of Satan is one of them. Now that Reyes Farrow has asked for her hand, Charley Davidson feels it's time to learn more about his past, but Reyes is reluctant to open up. When the official FBI file of his childhood abduction lands in her lap, Charley decides to go behind her mysterious beau’s back and conduct her own investigation. Because what could go wrong? Unfortunately, another case has fallen into her lap—one with dangerous implications. Some very insistent men want Charley to hunt down a witness who is scheduled to testify against their boss, a major player in the local crime syndicate. If Charley doesn't come up with an address in 48 hours, the people closest to her will start to disappear. Add to that a desperate man in search of the soul he lost in a card game, a dogged mother determined to find the ghost of her son, and a beautiful, young Deaf boy haunted by his new ability to see the departed as clearly as he sees the living, and Charley has her hands full. The fact that Reyes has caught on to her latest venture only adds fuel to the inferno that he is. Good thing for Charley she's used to multi-tasking and always up for a challenge…especially when that challenge comes in the form of Reyes Farrow.
So I ordered Sixth Grave on the Edge by Darynda Jones the moment it was available for pre-order and cracked this puppy open when it downloaded at 2 am. *SQUEE!* I read the first chapter, hugged my Nook and went to bed. Just knowing Charley, Reyes and Cookie were there for me in the AM, caused delicious dreams. To say I love this series just does not seem enough and while there will be no spoilers in my review, there may be some major fangirling and some fantastic quotes!
The Charley Davidson series is the perfect blend of urban fantasy, humor, and romance. Jones has this uncanny ability for snark and creates some of the hottest romantic scenes in the same book. It is like the perfect cup of coffee.
“The next thing I remembered was Reyes smiling down at me as the sun filtered into his apartment, his hair mussed, his lids hooded with the thick remnants of sleep. I stretched as those three little words that every girl longs to hear slipped from his mouth with effortless ease. As though they did every day. As though they didn’t mean the world to me. With one corner of his mouth tipping sensually, he asked, “Want some coffee?”And I fell. I fell hard.”
I adore Charley. The chick has named her girlie-bits, and she is hilarious. Anytime spent in her head is sure to make you smile like an idiot. In addition, her thoughts on Reyes..some of the best lines ever!
Oh, this is a review. Right. Ok, the tale picks up not long after Fifth Grave Past the Light ended. *my favorite of the series to date* and if you all remember Reyes Farrows asked Charley to marry him. I needed to know Charley’s answer?!? We get answers so no worries. What? You thought I would tell you. Pfft, no way! Not even a hint and with Jones do not expect it to be easy.
“Want to come over to my place?” I asked him. The sparkle in his eyes danced in humor. “I don’t know,” he said. “You live so far away.”
Charley is working several cases, one is an FBI child abduction cold case and it may involve Reyes. A desperate man lost his soul in a card game and when Charley learns why she, of course, plans to get it back. This may, in fact, give Reyes a heart attack. Things are never simple for our Reaper and along the way, we learn more about Reyes, Charley, her abilities and the shit storm that is coming their way.
We get to spend some quality time with Cookie and Ubie, as Charley meddles in their lives. Old characters are revisited and we get a few side stories with them. All are well done but my favorites were threads involving Amber and Angel. Of course, Charley gets herself in danger, makes Reyes angry and quite a few others but this is a typical week for her. Reyes is very present in this tale, and I loved every glimpse, comment and thought regarding him. The man can curl my toes like no other, and we get some scenes that….*eyes glaze over* Rain, sexy car, muscles, heat, walls, mind melting……….
*blinks* *blushes* Oops, I got lost in thought there. Where was I, oh yes Reyes. I love the banter between them all, and they have made this kind of weird family for Reyes. It was nice seeing him interact with them. Sometimes I think Reyes knows more then he lets on and at other times, I think he is just as clueless as Charley. Jones hinted at and shared some curious information and of course, I want more. I am so flippin’curious about Mr. Wong!!!
“It’s a simple yes/no question, Dutch.”
While the cases wrapped up in Sixth Grave on the Edge, we again have more questions than answers. I am usually smiling like a fool by the last chapter in complete Jones’ nirvana but then……
In typical Jones fashion in the last paragraph, she drops this bombshell and I was all Holy Frickin’ Hell!!! Thankfully we will not have long to wait as Seventh Grave and No Body will release October 21, 2014. *dances*
I tried to savor Sixth Grave on the Edge and managed to stretch it into two days and then curled into a fetal position with my truffles because it was over. One day I want to listen to the entire series on audio, but not until I have finished reading them first. If you haven’t read them you are cray-cray. That. Is. All.
“I have a perfect body, it’s in my trunk.-T-shirt”
“On a scale of one to stepping on a LEGO, how much pain are you in?”

LOL…Loved this….As though they didn’t mean the world to me. With one corner of his mouth tipping sensually, he asked, “Want some coffee?”And I fell. I fell hard.” — I about fell off the treadmill laughing when I was listening at the gym. The regulars in there now know I listen to audiobooks so they just ignore me. Plus, I’ve been upstaged by a homeless person that can afford a gym membership and works out in 12 layers of clothing so everyone ignores my laughing out loud. 😉 Great review and I am totally with you on the Reyes bandwagon!

Great review, and the lego quote is my favorite from this book!

This series is like, the best ever! I almost said awesome, but your Dean gifs reminded me that I have taken on Dean’s penchant for the word. LOL I have listened to the whole series, and I love the narration, however I do miss being able to highlight my favorite spots to go back and quote later.
kate
Love your review 😉 I love this series! I didn’t know book 6 is already out. Charley is hilarious and Reyes – oh lord. He’s just hot! I can understand how someone could get lost in thought when thinking about him.

I’ve been trying to read this series forever! I’m trying to get into Urban Fantasy, and this one is one of those books I have in line to get into it (Moon Called by Patricia Briggs didn’t really do it for me…) so your fangirling here really got my hopes up! I’m hoping it will deliver and I love it as much as you do *crosses fingers*

Love, love, love your review, K.! And the book itself was amazing. Last paragraph my jaw just dropped…. Can’t wait to see what’s next. And yes, the wall… *giggles*

Your review had me laughing, and the last quote just tipped me over the edge. There is NOTHING more painful than stepping on a LEGO! OK, ok. You’re convincing me to read these. But Kimba, (wails) when am I going to find the time?!!! You and all the other wonderful bloggers keep loading me up with all these great books!
Christy
Hell yeah, this rocked. I love this series so much. That bombshell at the end, I knew that was coming since book 4, but I was confused at first about the involvement of the other … entity. My adrenaline was going so hard that it took me a few minutes to process it all. LOL.
blodeuedd
Omg waaaaant. I can’t wait until it arrives
Heidi
Yep this one was fun but a bit too scattered for my taste. I had so many questions after this one. I think my fav still is Third Grave, I don’t know if it because I listened to that one or what, but it has been my fav. I did so love the whole thing with Cookie and Ubie and the wall in the bedroom too funny!
kimbacaffeinate
My favorite was the Fifth. I plan to go back and listen to the series, the audios have to be hilarious.
Candace
That was a fun review! I’ve only read the first but I loved it so I really need to catch up!

Always a pleasure to see “Dean” looking so fine. I have seen her books around and they all have beautiful covers. Hard to believe I haven’t read anything by her yet, but will add these to my TBR.

I like the opening line of that description. It sets up a fun read! “Few things in life can come between a grim reaper and her coffee.” Perfect!

Reyes and your Dean gifs! I skimmed your review since I have yet to read this, but LOVE!!!
Lupdilup
Fabulous review!!! But Kimba, the audio will put that extra 1/2 star in your experience 🙂 I can’t wait for you to listen to this or the next one.
Great job as always!!

Yay!! Your review was made that much better by adding the sexy Dean to the already sexy Reyes mix, you know that right? So freaking excited for this one. I planned on reading it last weekend and sadly (so freaking sadly) I couldn’t get to it.
I have plans to read this one SOON! I need to know more and dang it, I was hoping we would get more of the mysterious Mr. Wong, I know KNOW there is more to the little man’s story.
Livia
You broke out the gifs, clearly it’s serious business xD I’m gonna read this series for sure, I’ve been promising myself I would. It sounds like an awesome read and an awesome series, yey!!

You have no idea how happy I’m to see this. I have heard nothing but amazing things about this series and every time I plan to read the whole series before the next sequel is out but then again I’m always scared that it won’t be so good. Anyhow I must read this soon. Great review, Kim 🙂
Jenea
