A mythic warrior who'll stop at nothing to possess her...

After enduring years of torture from the vampire horde, Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan, is enraged to find the predestined mate he's waited millennia for is a vampire. Or partly one. This Emmaline is a small, ethereal half Valkyrie/half vampire, who somehow begins to soothe the fury burning within him.

A vampire captured by her wildest fantasy...

Sheltered Emmaline Troy finally sets out to uncover the truth about her deceased parents—until a powerful Lykae claims her as his mate and forces her back to his ancestral Scottish castle. There, her fear of the Lykae—and their notorious dark desires—ebbs as he begins a slow, wicked seduction to sate her own dark cravings.

An all-consuming desire...

Yet when an ancient evil from her past resurfaces, will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a proud warrior to his knees and turn a gentle beauty into the fighter she was born to be?

I read The Warlord Wants Forever by Kresley Cole the first book in the Immortals After Dark series in the anthology Blood Red Kiss and knew two things. First I needed more of this paranormal world, and second, it HAD to be on audio. Robert Petkoff narrates and is a personal favorite. Heat, snark, stubbornness and a whole lot of heart had me listening to A Hunger Like No Other into the wee hours. I devoured all twelve hours in less than two days. I finished both satiated and hungry for more.

A Hunger Like No Other shares Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan and a unique vampire named Emmaline Troy. Lachlain is from Scotland, and Petkoff delivered a beautiful brogue accent. Lachlain has been imprisoned for one hundred and fifty years when he scents his mate. Emmaline is a sheltered vampire who has grown up with the Valkyrie. She is abroad searching for information about her father when she is captured by Lachlain. The story grabbed me from within minutes and started on a dark note completely enthralling me.

The romance that unfolds is turbulent, humorous, and at times scintillating. I laughed, cringed and wept as we learn Lachlain’s history and watch him adapt to modern times. Emmaline is such a unique, sheltered creature and Lachlain forces her to change, to demand more of herself and to question. I loved every dang minute. The heated romance built slowly until I thought I would burst with frustration. Lachlain is truly alpha, but Cole exposes his softer side allowing me to fall for the big bad wolf.

Cole weaves in suspense and danger from all sides. The coven who have adopted Emmaline, see Lachlain as nothing more than a dog. Lachlan’s history has him repulsed by the fact his mate is a vampire. The author wove her magic, bringing the past into the present and reuniting me with characters from book one even as she hinted at things to come.

A Hunger Like No Other was equal parts light and dark. Battles, near death experiences, wraiths, demons and more rear their ugly heads, but Cole offsets this with family, humor, and banter. Listening was a pure pleasure as Petkoff gave each character their own unique voice. He performed the female voices surprisingly well and captured Emmaline’s subtle snark.

Thanks to my Secret Santa and a lovely sale I have the next four books on audio and cannot wait to devour them.

There are so many great sounding series on audio lately. I’m going to have to find more hours in the day!

  2. Lily B

I’m glad to hear this series has sucked you in, I been wanting to read Cole myself for a really long time. I might just have to bite the bullet

  3. Darlene

I agree, Robert Petkoff is amazing! I still need to read the IAD series, but I listened to the first book in the spin-off The Dacians series, and I was hooked!

  4. Melanie Simmons

This series is a favorite of mine too, especially on audio. This series is the first time I listened to Robert Petkoff, and now I’m requesting audiobooks to review based on him narrating. I can’t wait to revisit the entire series through your reviews. 🙂

How fun! I was really taken when I read this series, but it would be a good re-read as audio it looks like. Oh yes, poor Lachlan and Emmy made me laugh how much adjusting they both had to do in their fated mate and the Valkyries attitude cracked me up.

  6. Tanya

I’m not one for rereads, but everyone has such great things to say about the audio I just might have to make an exception and listen to it. I love the way the Valkries defend Emmaline, they are my favorite characters in this series!

Wow you really make it sound GOOD Kim! I love narrator that make the difference accents and drawl feel authentic. I realized that I enjoyed most PNR as audiobooks. It sounds like, even though he is a true alpha, Lachlan makes Emmaline evolve as person instead of overpowering her LOVE THAT I’ll be reading this one after I’m done with Seven Great review good secret Santa!

  8. Lorna

This is the only one I’ve read in this series. I’ve had five paperbacks in this series on my shelf ever since. I keep meaning to read them and now you have me wanting to get back into them. Great review, glad you loved it!

I’ve heard nothing but great things about Kresley Cole’s books and this sounds like no exception. Thanks for the tip about the audio! I’ll have to go that route. I have an easier time with out of my comfort zone genres in audio as it is and knowing this is a great one makes it even better!

This was the first and only book that I’ve read by Kresley Cole, but I read it a long time ago. I liked it so I wonder why I never read the other books. Hmm. I’m weird.

Great reading your thoughts on this one, though. As always. 🙂

Love this series and switched to audio when I figured out Petkoff could make the phone book exciting! Need to get back to it (at #8) as I’ve enjoyed every story.

I’ve never tried this author and I’m not exactly sure why other than my fear that the series would be too much for me maybe. I guess I’ll never know until I try it right?
    Have a wonderful weekend!

Yay! I’m so happy you enjoyed Lachlain and Emmaline’s story as much as I did, Kimberly. And Petkoff just makes it all the better, doesn’t he? I’m itching to get back to the series myself. I just have a few (read: many) listens for review to get to first. 😉 I can’t wait to see your thoughts on the next few books. I want to know your favorites! 🙂
