29th May

It’s time once again for Nonna’s Corner where I share books I’ve read with my grandchildren, affectionately referred to as “the Royals” here at Caffeinated. Today we are sharing, Pinky Got Out! by Michael Portis. Grab a cup of iced tea and see why we loved it.

Fans of Tad Hills and Jory John will love this hilarious picture book about Pinky, a flamingo at the zoo who sneakily slips out to join a group of kids on their zoo tour.

Pinky isn't your typical flamingo. He's a real escape artist!

When he sees a young girl named Penny and her class touring the zoo, Pinky feels like they're birds of a feather and decides to make a break for it.

Penny is the first to spot the flamingo hiding in plain sight. One by one, she lets her friends in on Pinky's antics as he tries to blend in with the seals, the meerkats, and even the pandas.

Young readers will enjoy trying to find Pinky on every spread and will be curious to discover whether he can actually fly the coop!

Pinky Got Out! written by Michael Portis and illustrated by Lori Richmond brought tons of laughter and excitement to bedtime as the Royals searched for Pinky the Flamingo as children from a local school visited.

Fashioned like a Where is Waldo book, the children loved scanning each page for Pinky. The Zookeeper leads a group of children through the different exhibits while sharing tidbits about each animal. For example, a snake can grow as long as a garden hose.

While the different animals and exhibits were interesting, it was Pinky who caused the greatest excitement. Princess Sophia, (4 yrs) practically squealed with joy each time she spotted Pinky. Even repeated readings did not lessen her enjoyment. Prince Clayton, (2 yrs) loved pointing out everything and of course finding Pinky.

The illustrations were simplistic and busy enough to make finding Pinky on some pages a challenge that delighted these young readers. I like the inside front and back cover. It has a map of the Zoo. On the inside front, Pinky is in the Flamingo exhibit, but in the back of the book you can spot her in all the exhibits.

Pinky Got Out! was a fun read and is perfect for family or small groups of children.

Ohhh, how I missed Nonna’s Corner. I love this. Pinky got out sounds adorable. I love that it is based on a flamingo. It’s great that they give tidbits of the different animals. I am glad the princess enjoyed the story!

WOW! This sounds like fun. My nephew is a little older but he never tires of Where’s Waldo type of books. And I love maps in picture books. 😉 I’ll have to see if our library has this one for him.
