As a reader, I am sure you often wonder what draws another reader to a particular book. Is it the cover or perhaps the synopsis? I was drawn to The Shore for a number of reasons. If I am being honest, MacLeod Andrews name listed as a narrator first piqued my interest. Do you do that? The second thing that spoke to me was the setting, as I am very familiar with the shores along the Chesapeake Bay. The Shore is a collective of stories and perspectives that both intrigued and frustrated me.
This year I have been making a conscious effort to try new to me authors and when an opportunity presented itself to read Flight from Death by Yasmime Galenorn, I jumped. Flight from Death is the first in her new Fly by Night, urban fantasy series. While it takes place in the same realm as her popular Otherworld series, it is not necessary to read them. Did I mention the main character is a DRAGON! An intense haunting and rarely seen supernatural creatures make Flight from Death a great read for fans of urban fantasy.
K. A. Tucker has become one of my favorite authors and her Burying Water series is among my favorites. I jumped into Chasing River without reading the synopsis and was delighted to find we were not in Oregon but Dublin! Amber Welles is traveling and it is here that her life is about to change. Filled with suspense, tender moments and a look into some of Ireland’s history Chasing River delivered all that I hoped for and more. While this is classified as NA, it has the feel of an adult novel.
The Silenced by Heather Graham is the fifteenth book in the Krewe of Hunters series, but do not let that intimidate you. Each of the books focuses on one murder mystery and a romance. The Silenced gave us a missing young woman and the bodies of others showing up in local rivers. Weave in some Washington politics and you have yourself a very intense mystery.
The Witch of Bourbon Street by Suzanne Palmieri offers a lush, Gothic tale wrapped in mystery, and magic. This was my first Palmieri book and her descriptive writing style is beautiful. The New Orleans setting and the series of unsolved murders drew me to this novel set in 1902. I would classify it as women’s fiction with a touch of magical realism.
