Only his memories can save her…
A great primal power has risen. The Queen of Flesh and Fire has become the Primal of Blood and Bone—the true Primal of Life and Death. And the battle Casteel, Poppy, and their allies have been fighting has only just begun. Gods are awakening across Iliseeum and the mortal realm, readying for the war to come.
But when Poppy falls into stasis, Cas faces the very real possibility that the dire, unexpected consequences of what she is becoming could take her away from him. Cas is given some advice, though—something he plans to cling to as he waits to see her beautiful eyes open once more: Talk to her.
And so, he does. He reminds Poppy how their journey began, revealing things about himself that only Kieran knows in the process. But it’s anybody’s guess what she’ll wake to or exactly how much of the realm and Cas will have changed when she does.
#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout revisits Poppy and Casteel’s epic love story in the next installment of the Blood and Ash series. But this time, Hawke gets to tell the tale.
I’ll be honest, I did not read the blurb and did not know what A Soul of Blood and Ash was about. I autobuy the series and was eager to dive in. So eager I grabbed the audio ALC just to listen sooner…lol. So when I saw it was Casteel’s point of view and takes us back to the beginning, I admit I was a tad disappointed. I have never really been big on books told from a second point of view…. Armentrout may have changed my mind. This is the listen; I didn’t know I needed.
As with most fantasy, it is best to listen to this series in the order of its release. From relationships to the transformation of Poppy, you’ll want to experience it from the beginning. While this book is told from Casteel’s point of view, it doesn’t highlight everything.
Do not skip this audiobook if you have similar concerns. We learn things. Particularly in the present when Poppy is in stasis. It was also fantastic to see what Casteel was experiencing, and the author did a great job of sharing his side of the story.
I enjoyed time spent with the couple, and Kierren. If I am honest, it was a comfortable retelling with tidbits of new. Unlike the previous books where I have felt anxious about what will happen, this wasn’t so. Sure, the current events had me anxious about Poppy, but the retelling parts were like warm apple pie with a burst of flavor.
Tim Campbell narrates Casteel’s perspective. His tone and emotions he brought to the characters and story enhanced my enjoyment. A stellar performance.
The ending left me dying for the next audiobook….

I’ve read the first in this series and need to read on! I used to devour JLA’s books the minute they came out, but I’m behind with this whole series. Glad to hear this was good, great review!
Kimberly
I read one or two of her earlier books, but love the fantasy genre.

To be honest, I didn’t know what this book was about either. I’ve really loved this series so far and I have this one on my list too.
Kimberly
I am glad I was not alone.

Like you, I’m not usually a fan of a book that tells the same story from a different perspective. I’m glad this one was able to add enough new context to the series to make it worth the listen.

Yes, I usually don’t want a repeat of the the past book from another POV unless I absolutely love the series. Sounds like that isn’t the case here given that you get new info. My daughter loves this series, but I haven’t tried it. Someday!
Kimberly
Glad she is enjoying it and hope you try as well.
