A delayed ferryboat brings people together in the best of ways during the holiday season in this enchanting Christmas novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber.
Avery and Reed Bond have always shared a close-knit relationship, having weathered life's storms side by side. Even so, Avery often finds herself exasperated by her brother's relentless matchmaking, while Reed can't resist teasing his sister—after all, isn't that what siblings do? Following the recent passing of their beloved Gram, the woman who lovingly raised them, Reed and Avery decide to honor her memory by spending Christmas together.
However, their holiday plans take an unexpected turn when a mechanical failure strands Avery on the ferry in the middle of the Puget Sound and Reed waiting for her arrival. At first, the inconvenience seems to halt the festivities, but soon, Avery and Reed discover that this unforeseen detour might just be a blessing in disguise.
While stuck on the ferry, Avery meets a handsome sailor and witnesses a Christmas miracle that reignites her belief in the holiday spirit. Meanwhile, Reed runs into a coworker who’s also waiting for a family member to arrive, sparking an unexpected and delightful connection.
In this tale of holiday magic, the Bond siblings find themselves swept up in taking a chance on love, proving that sometimes the best moments in life come when we least expect them.
At just under six hours, A Ferry Merry Christmas by Debbie Macomber is the perfect feel-good holiday story to listen to today. The story takes place on a ferry in Puget Sound and in the area surrounding the Old Market in Seattle. The story is filled with romance, from new beginnings to second chances. It reminds us of the spirit of Christmas as passengers come to the aid of a soon to be father stranded away from the expectant mother. It is also a story of forgiveness and found family, as Macomber introduces us to ordinary folks traveling towards loved ones during the busy holiday season.
The story begins as Avery boards the ferry to travel to spend Christmas with her brother Reed Bond. This is the first Christmas the two will spend without their beloved Gram. The two are close, even if Avery gets frustrated by Reed’s attempts at matchmaking. Thoughts of that quickly vanish when the ferry shuts down, leaving her and the other passengers stuck far from the shore. On board, she meets handsome Sailor heading home to see his family and witnesses the magic of the Christmas spirit.
Meanwhile, on shore, Reed waits, and when the ferry fails to arrive, he sees a female coworker, and the two chat as they wait. Soon, they are sharing lunch and spending the day together. I loved the sights and sounds of the Old Market, from the Ferris wheel to Starbuck’s first store.
We get three romances. Two are brand new, and I loved watching their connections unfold. The third is a second-chance romance that tugged at my heartstrings. If you are looking for a holiday story to fill you with the spirit of Christmas and leave you smiling, this one is for you.
While I started out reading A Ferry Merry Christmas, I ended up listening to the narration of Abigail Reno, who delighted me with her character voices. I highly recommend listening.
