The Academy always comes first . . . which makes marriage to its most formidable adversary an exceedingly inconvenient arrangement.
Well removed from London’s more curious eyes, the Benevolent Academy for the Betterment of Young Ladies strives toward one clandestine to distract, disrupt, and discredit men in power who would seek to harm the advancement of women—by appropriate means, of course.
When intrepid newspaper editor Miles Quincy starts to question the school’s intentions, the Academy appoints Penelope “Nell” Trewlove, one of their brightest graduates, to put this nuisance to rest. An easy enough mission, she supposes. Or it would be, if Miles wasn’t so fascinating—too fascinating to resist—and if Nell’s visit to London didn’t perfectly coincide with the murder of one of Miles’s reporters.
When the inexorable claws of fate trap Nell and Miles in a compromising situation, they agree to an arrangement that will save their reputations while enabling them to investigate the story that led to a man’s death, as well as the surprising chemistry between them . . .
While each novel in the Crinoline Academy features one of its students or teachers and contains its own romance and mystery situation, I recommend reading them in order to avoid spoilers regarding previous couples and cases.
Penelope (Nell) is sent to London to represent the Academy and interview with newspaper editor Miles Quincy. Quincy has taken an interest in the academy and its students after his best friend marries one of its former students. The academy holds many secrets, and Nell is determined to put Miles off. A cat, a crinoline and a bishop are about to destroy not only Miles’s reputation but Nell’s position as a teacher at the academy.
Meanwhile, Nell is looking for a missing girl who was on her way to the academy, and one of Miles’ reporters is in trouble. I absolutely loved their met cute and what occurred within the paper’s offices. Their chemistry was undeniable, even as Nell dismissed all the signs, believing Miles couldn’t possibly see beyond her disability. Not to mention, she is stubbornly independent.
The tale that unfolds held me captive, from the investigations to slow-building romance and marriage of necessity. Set in historic London, I loved spending time with these characters and catching up with out previous couple. A little heat, adorable cats and a sweet romance delivered.
Perfect for fans who love historical mysteries, witty, headstrong females trained in the art of defense and genuine heroes. I cannot wait for the next novel in Matthews Crinoline Academy series.

I absolutely loved Miles and Nell’s story! Ms. Corvus is ruthless but I appreciated the quantities she’s instilled in her girls! That they know they have value and are trained to be a formidable opponent! And then there’s the adorable cats!
