A Courtship of Convenience
Sophie Appersett is quite willing to marry outside of her class to ensure the survival of her family. But the darkly handsome Mr. Edward Sharpe is no run-of-the-mill London merchant. He’s grim and silent. A man of little emotion—or perhaps no emotion at all. After two months of courtship, she’s ready to put an end to things.
A Last Chance for Love
But severing ties with her taciturn suitor isn’t as straightforward as Sophie envisioned. Her parents are outraged. And then there’s Charles Darwin, Prince Albert, and that dratted gaslight. What’s a girl to do except invite Mr. Sharpe to Appersett House for Christmas and give him one last chance to win her? Only this time there’ll be no false formality. This time they’ll get to know each other for who they really are.
I know it’s not Christmas, but last night it was -12° and the wind was howling so a Victorian romance might be just the thing… and look at that gorgeous cover!!
A Holiday By Gaslight: A Victorian Christmas Novella by Mimi Matthews with its beautiful cover offered a delightful listen regardless of the season.
A good daughter, a quiet and a grim yet handsome and successful man of trade. A hasty decision and a second chance will soon leave you swooning!!
I loved everything about this Victorian romance, from the parents I wanted to throttle to the handsome merchant who felt he wasn’t good enough to the noble daughter who put up with entirely too much.
I confess I owned this on my Kindle and snatched it up because of the gorgeous cover. I had planned on reading it for the 2020 Ho-Ho-Ho readathon, but then I discovered it was on Audible Escape and devoured it during a 3 month membership deal. I am so glad I listened!
Alex Wyndham narrates this four-hour novella, and I grinned the entire time I listened. It transported me. I became completely caught up in the comings and goings, the awkward exchanges and those kisses. Oh my!
I am looking forward to discovering more of Mimi Matthews works and look forward to listening to more of Alex Wyndham’s narrations.
A Holiday by Gaslight had all the elements I love in a historical romance and just the right touches Christmas.
A Holiday By Gaslight by Mimi Matthews a swoon-worthy Victorian romance perfect anytime of the year! #audiobook Share on X

Tanya @ Girl Plus Books
This sounds like it was the perfect fit for your bitterly cold night at home. 🙂 I’ve never listened to a historical romance on audio but you definitely have me curious about this one.
Sandy @ Somewhere Only We Know
I highly enjoy Mimi Matthews myself. She’s an underrated author in my opinion. I hope you get to check out all of her other books. I’ve read all but her non-fiction and her first fiction I believe. I can’t wait to see what you think of her other books. Glad you enjoyed this one!

This charmer was my first book by her, too. I was really cheering on their romance. I’ve since snagged two others and spotted a third on Net Galley.

Oh my goodness! A cover that to me screams Christmas. Though not a big fan of novellas nor, for that matter, romances … though that said, what is it about Victorian romances that makes it all that more appealing? … this would make a perfect addition to this years December reading.
Nick @ The Infinite Limits of Love
This sounds like a very holiday-esque, perfect for the cold weather! The relationship sounds very swoony!
