Does anyone lose sleep when their stress levels are elevated? I get stressed about things I have zero control over and even as I am telling myself, not my monkeys, not my problem, I end up losing sleep, feeling anxious and suffering panic attacks. I threw myself into audiobooks, dealt with sick children and thought about writing reviews…lol Stay Caffeinated.

Sorry to hear you are so stressed right now. I have no recommendations… I usually start reading after an hour or so.

  2. Katherine

My sleep is definitely impacted when I’m super stressed. I’ve worked really hard on getting a solid nightime routine and that has really helped but it’s still no fun when I can feel the stress coming through. I hope you’re having a much more relaxing week.

Sleep? What’s that. In all seriousness, I’ve struggled with sleep over the years and especially of late – I’m trying a new tea which seems to be helping some. Now I just need something for the anxiety. Hope things level out for you.

With everything happening between my son and daughter-in-law, and the grandkids living her for a month, I have been extremely stressed. I also don’t sleep well when that happens. I think women tend to do that. I hope things settle for you soon Kimberly.

I used to get stressed really easily and have trouble falling asleep because I’d be overthinking so much. Listening to audiobooks really help to quiet the thoughts in my mind and I sleep much easier now. I still get the occasional sleepless night, but it’s so much better than before! I hope you feel better soon!

It’s interesting you mention about the stressing about things that are out of your control, as that’s what I actually got some advice from my therapist this week about. I’m working to stop and make a note that something is not in my control and consciously work to not stress about it. Good luck with that for you too!

I used to stress alot about my friends kids and choices they made, they were not my kids but i was worried and was sure there something i did not do that would of helped them make a better choice. Those kids are now all grown and i learned they gonna do what they are gonna do and all i can do is make sure they know i here with an open door if they need help and i always a phone call away. Have a good week.

Yes, unfortunately it doesn’t take much for me to lose sleep. My brain works the overnight shift. I try to focus on mindful breathing which helps sometimes. I hope your sleep quality improves and you have a great week. 🙂

Oh, I can so relate! Yes, I have trouble sleeping when I’m stressed and worried. And at our age, hormone levels and fluctuations can also be a factor. I had more trouble with insomnia and nightime anxiety after perimenopause hit. It’s a little better now that I’m post-menopause, but I still don’t sleep long enough most nights, and stress definitely makes that worse.

For me, the best way to handle it in the moment is to keep pushing the negative thoughts away—as you say, you can’t do anything about a lot of it. Instead I try to focus on the here-and-now, both the physical world immediately around me and the things I find emotionally comforting, especially the things that connect the two (like the soft sound of my husband’s breathing.) Alternatively, I can imagine myself in what a therapist called a “quiet place,” a place where I feel at peace. In my mind, I try to recreate the sights, sounds, smells, even physical feelings like a breeze on my face.

And if none of that works, I read for 20 minutes, then try again.

I hope you are able to find some techniques that work for you, when stress is robbing you of sleep.

Yes I lose sleep too. It’s hard to tell our brain to shut down at will. I hope you’ll sleep better next week and that the kids will heal fast!

  11. Lisa R. Howeler

I definitely have trouble sleeping when there is a lot of stress going on. For me I have to let it go to God or I’ll throw myself into panic attacks and then feel ill and the whole day or week is shot. I hope things get better.

  12. A Voracious Reader

    I’m in a constant state of stress right now. I can’t talk about it yet, but soon everyone will know why. I sleep, but it’s not restful. I’m tired all the time. We’ll get through it though. {{{hugs}}}

  13. Jessica @ a GREAT read

Yeah, sleep can be hard when my stress levels are at the max! I hope things calm down for you so you can get a good night’s rest!

Nice new read! That’s a new to me one but I hope you enjoy it!

The Ho-Ho-Ho Readathon sounds interesting! I’ll have to keep an eye out for more info 🙂 I keep seeing more and more mentions of Matt Haig and haven’t read one of his books yet :hide:

  15. Jody

I can stress myself out so badly that I won’t sleep for days on end, so I can relate, Kimberly. It is hard for me to let that control go. I know that there is nothing I can do, but I still want that control.

  16. Bookworm

I’m the same, I lose sleep to stressing out. I listen to sleep hypnosis meditation on my headphones on YouTube when I’m falling asleep and it helps a lot. I hope your week is less stressful.
I can’t wait till the HoHoHo Readathon!

  17. Deb Nance at Readerbuzz

I can’t wait to read The Life Impossible. My book club just read The Midnight Library, and we all loved it. Haig is speaking at the Edinburgh Book Festival at 7 Central Time today.

  18. Lola

Stress is so difficult to deal with. I can relate to struggling with anxiety and stress, although luckily I don’t usually lose sleep. I hope whatever is stressing you out gets resolved quickly.

  19. Lori

I am sorry you are feeling stressed. Maybe some meditation or soft music before bed would help. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

  20. Mark

Yes, stress definitely makes me lose sleep. And I find myself stressed over so much in my life these days. But reading is one of the best ways I’ve found to calm my mind and let me drift off.
