Illustrated by Emelie Wiklund Eve’s Duckings by Maria Monte, shares the delightful story of a little girl who wants the ducklings at the lake to be her friend.
What a charming story from the colorful illustrations to Eve’s determination. My grandchild loved following the story and seeing Eve’s attempts and failures. The illustrations give context to the story and helped the children visualize the events taking place.
Each day Eve and her grandpa walk to the lake and Eve tries to make friends with the baby ducklings. When she gets too close, the mama duck chases her away. My grandchildren laughed and recalled a momma duck who honked and chased passers by as we all admired her ducklings. After a soaked attempt at friendship, Eve stops her attempts until one day she has an idea.
The children and I discussed why the ducklings moved away from Eve, and why the mama honked. We also tried to come up with ideas on how to make Eve could make friends with them.
The book touches upon boundaries, kindness, and respect for all living things. This is a delightful book for your classroom or as a part of your child’s bedtime routine.
