Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, is back solving new cases in the 'USA Today' bestselling series set in Victorian England.

Inspector Treadles, Charlotte Holmes’s friend and collaborator, has been found locked in a room with two dead men, both of whom worked with his wife at the great manufacturing enterprise she has recently inherited.

Rumors fly. Had Inspector Treadles killed the men because they had opposed his wife’s initiatives at every turn? Had he killed in a fit of jealous rage, because he suspected Mrs. Treadles of harboring deeper feelings for one of the men? To make matters worse, he refuses to speak on his own behalf, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

Charlotte finds herself in a case strewn with lies and secrets. But which lies are to cover up small sins, and which secrets would flay open a past better left forgotten? Not to mention, how can she concentrate on these murders, when Lord Ingram, her oldest friend and sometime lover, at last dangles before her the one thing she has always wanted?

Narrated by Kate Reading, Murder on Cold Street by Sherry Thomas delivered a locked room murder, scandalous kisses and cakes.

The Lady Sherlock series on audio has become a favorite here at Caffeinated. I love Charlotte Holmes and the goings on of Baker Street.

Charlotte’s friend and collaborator, Inspector Treadles, has been detained on charges of murder. Charlotte believes him incapable of the murder, but evidence suggests he suspected Mrs. Treadles of having affections for another which drove him to commit murder. Charlotte posing as an investigator on behalf of her brother Sherlock Holmes sets out to investigate. Of course, she won’t be able to stop herself from meddling in the affairs of others… but that’s why I adore her.

The tale was clever, from house parties to business ventures and shady characters. Her companions aid Charlotte along with the ever dashing Lord Ingram.

I laughed as Charlotte found herself distracted by Lord Ingram. She is so logical and detailed about everything, and watching her this way was positively delightful! I am glad we have reached this stage of their relationship and felt Thomas balanced the story between the case and the characters.

Kate Reading narrates and has become the voice of Charlotte. She nails her oddities and personality so well. The writing lends itself perfectly to the audio format. I love that I can easily identify each character by the unique voice assigned to them.

Will Inspector Treadles be home for Christmas? Can Charlotte find the evidence needed to clear him? You’ll have to listen to find out!

I’m reading this one but I listened to the last one and loved Kate Reading’s narration. She’s one of my favorite narrators and this is a series that I always enjoy.

Second review of this I’ve read today and it sounds good. I might already have book one. Hoping anyway. Great review. I might just have to jump to audio if I don’t have the first one. I’ll come back through you if I don’t.

Weirdly, I got it free. Not sure why? It said it was part of my membership. Audible. Maybe it’s part of what’s taking the place of Escape. There’s nothing marked on it to say it’s borrowed. I don’t know.

Yep, if you have a membership where you get credits monthly or annually you get the Plus category for free. It rotates titles so listen or download to your phone app.

So once Escape is over will they still charge me extra for the plus? Or will my monthly charge go lower?

I too love this series and adored this one! I am enjoying watching Charlotte evolve and how the gang is becoming a found family.

I’ve seen this book around. It sounds good. But it’s the 5th book in the series. Do you think it’s a standalone read? I generally find it hard to get into a mystery series when it’s not the first or second book.

Whilst each book contains a mystery, for the love of the characters I recommend starting from the beginning.
