Emma’s latest journal entries in Volume three begin with a St. Crispin’s-style treasure hunt, continue with her ventures in the London social season at the behest of her Aunt Eugenia, and finish with another St. Crispin’s neighborhood curiosity.  Beth Brower’s Emma M Lion has grown on me with each subsequent volume and I have become insatiable for the next installment.

After having rescued Jane Eyre for the posterity of her old girls’ school haunt, established a new mysterious war photographer tenant in the other half of her home to help with the income struggles, satisfied Aunt Eugenia in helping put forward her gorgeous cousin for her first London Season while acquiring a few interested fellows of her own, Emma sets out on a new venture- the Julius Caesar-themed clue hunt partnered, of all surprises, with her annoying Cousin Archibald.  Emma’s misadventures along the way were entertaining.

Her thunderstorm of a tenant has requested the use of an unused downstairs parlor for his new portrait studio and, as a result, The Tenant and Emma come to know one another well and, it is to him, Emma shares her painful grief and loss of her first love dying on the battlefield.

But, Emma isn’t made for melancholy and the antics about her St. Crispin’s neighborhood and Lapus Lazuli House keep her in mischief and fill her journal pages.The Unselected Journals of Emma M Lion are a series of Victorian Era long-novellas written in epistolary form to delicious and addicting results.  Beth Brower brings all the shades of emotion- led by lighthearted wit and mischief, superb quizzical characters, and an eclectic tale that grows on one as it progresses.  Narrator, Genevieve Gaunt, is the voice of Emma and her fellow eccentric characters, and I urge others to pounce on the audio versions and prepare for the marvel in store in this slow-build series.
