When two young sisters disappear from a strip mall parking lot in a small Pennsylvania town, their devastated mother hires an enigmatic bounty hunter, Alice Vega, to help find the girls. Immediately shut out by a local police department already stretched thin by budget cuts and the growing OxyContin and meth epidemic, Vega enlists the help of a disgraced former cop, Max Caplan. Cap is a man trying to put the scandal of his past behind him and move on, but Vega needs his help to find the girls, and she will not be denied.
With little to go on, Vega and Cap will go to extraordinary lengths to untangle a dangerous web of lies, false leads, and complex relationships to find the girls before time runs out, and they are gone forever.
Two Girls Down by Louisa Luna is the first Alice Vega mystery-thriller and after reading The Janes, I had to come back to the beginning to see how Max and Alice began working together. Fast-paced and intense, these two make the perfect PI partners as they search for two missing girls.
I love discovering a new favorite author. I picked up The Janes which released last week and afterwards decided I wanted to read the first book. Luckily for me, my library had a digital copy, and I devoured this over Christmas.
Alice, lives in sunny California and has made a name for herself finding missing persons. She is hired by the family of two young sisters who mysteriously disappear from a store parking lot. When the police won’t share information, Alice reaches out to Max Caplan, a local PI and former detective with the local police. Max works mostly cheater cases and looks after his teenage daughter. I am so glad I went back and learned about their initial meeting and first case.
Even if Max is considered a disgraced cop, he isn’t a rule breaker and Alice isn’t afraid to push the boundaries to get answers. It makes them the perfect team. The case soon leads them to drugs and other missing person cases.
I cringed, laughed, and cheered even if my inner radar tipped me off about the culprit upon our first encounter. Piecing together the how, and why was brilliant and a real page-turner.. Luna weaves a tight tapestry, pulling all the pieces and threads together until the image is clear.
I cannot wait for more Alice Vega, and I hope Max joins her! Fans of mystery, suspense-thrillers and PI teams will devour Two Girls Down.

That’s great that it was still an enjoyable read even if you guessed the culprit early on. Max and Alice sound like a duo I’d like to get to know so thanks for putting this series on my radar.

Great review, Kimba! This sounds right up my alley. Plus, I lived in PA for a few years, so that’s a great draw right off the bat.
