Nonna’s Corner is a special feature where I share books I’ve reviewed with my grandchildren, affectionately referred to as the “Royals” here at Caffeinated.
Today, the Royals and I are sharing the illustrated paperback of Growing Pains the Giraffe by Terry Watson. It tells the story of a giraffe named Growing Pains, who, like most children, is experiencing them. Our youngest granddaughter, Hazel, has been experiencing pains in her legs and feet at night, and this story was perfect for discussing them.

Growing Pains the Giraffe will learn a lot in his life! Come join him as his mama and papa answer his many questions and help him to grow not only tall but also wise.
Growing Pains’ neck and legs are hurting, and his parents explain how these pains are actually a blessing. It explains how our bodies grow and the benefits. Growing Pains, learns he will one day be able to reach the tallest leaves on the trees, which are the sweetest tasting.
Themes are perseverance and understanding that some things are hard but ultimately worth it. The Royals enjoyed the story and quickly talked about things they could do when they were older/taller. The story is perfect for reading groups or self-early readers.
Reading age: 5 – 9 years
While the book’s last line references Romans in the Bible, groups/families can simply admit this note. I loved how it opened up talks about not only growing pains but persevering even when things seemed tough. The author wrote this book for his own grandchildren, and I loved that.
