I was drawn to both the cover and concept of Struck. I love post-apocalyptic dystopian worlds and I’m fascinated by lightening. In author Jennifer Bosworth’s world Los Angeles and other areas of the world have been struck with natural disasters. Experts are worried there will be more events, and religious zealots are crying end of times.

Insurgent by Veronica Roth was perhaps one of the most anticipated novels for 2012. I absolutely loved Divergent book one in the Divergent series as you can see my review here. I pre-ordered this novel and worried whether or not book two would give me the same rush I experienced in the first one. I am delighted to say that not only did Roth deliver she raised the bar. Insurgent captured me from the first sentence and held me in its grip till the last page. *sighs* Now I have to endure another bout of anticipation while waiting for book three.
The Hunt by Andrew Fukuda is the first in a brilliant new series. Fukuda has created a terrifying world in which vampires rule and humans are almost extinct. I consumed this dark tale in a few hours and it quickly became one of my favorite reads for 2012. Gone are the vampires that sparkle! In Fukuda’s dystopian world we hide among these vicious killers. This tale was fast paced, horrifying and delicious!
The Selection by Kiera Cass is a Cinderella tale set in a dystopian world. This was my first read by the author and the gorgeous cover is what first drew me to it. The tale offers drama, romance, a love triangle and suspense. Similarities to the popular television show the Bachelor and the novel Hunger Games extend only to the selection being televised by the nation and perhaps the hope of living happily ever after. This was a fun easy read that I consumed in a few hours.
Immortal Rules is the first in a new series by Iron Fey author Julia Kagawa. The Blood of Eden series is a dystopia that takes place sixty years after a virus killed off most of the world’s human population. The countryside has been abandoned and humans now reside in Vampire Cities. This was my first time reading Kagawa’s work and I found it to be absolutely delightful. It reminded me of a young adult version of one of my favorite books The Passage by Justin Cronin.
