The #1 New York Times bestselling author of One by One returns with an unputdownable mystery following a woman on the search for answers a decade after her friend’s murder.

April Coutts-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford.

Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the second, April was dead.

Now, a decade later, Hannah and Will are expecting their first child, and the man convicted of killing April, former Oxford porter John Neville, has died in prison. Relieved to have finally put the past behind her, Hannah’s world is rocked when a young journalist comes knocking and presents new evidence that Neville may have been innocent. As Hannah reconnects with old friends and delves deeper into the mystery of April’s death, she realizes that the friends she thought she knew all have something to hide…including a murder.

SUSPENSE thriller twisted well written

I’ve come to enjoy Ruth Ware’s twisted suspense thrillers, particularly on audio, and devoured The It Girl as soon as I downloaded it. When the man sentenced for the murder of Hannah Jones’ college roommate April almost a decade ago, it opens up unwanted memories and soon Hannah is questioning everything that happened…. You’ll want to grab your earbuds and listen to this one!

Hannah and her husband Will are expecting their first child when news comes that the man convicted of killing April is dead. Hannah was her roommate at university and Will had dated April. They, along with Hugh, Ryan, and Emily, were inseparable friends. Hannah suffers survivals and imposter guilt and she wonders if former Oxford porter John Neville really killed April.

The tale told from Hannah’s POV quickly pulled me in. Hannah pushes, probes and often felt unreliable as she conjured up the past, talked to friends, and took us on trips down memory lane to events leading up to the murder. As the story progressed, the tension built until I was so lost in the story the outside world slipped away. Each heart-pounding moment kept me on edge.

Imogen Church’s tone, inflection and voices brilliantly capture Ware’s story. She aids in building up the suspense and allowing us to hear and feel Hannah’s franticness. Church makes listening the format to choose.

Fans of suspenseful thrillers, mysteries and well-honed tales will want to add The It Girl to their summer TBR pile.

I love Imogen Church as a narrator! I enjoyed the first two books by Ware but have been iffy on the other books I’ve read. This one does sound compelling. I need to get the audio for it!

I don’t listen to a lot of books – it’s a relatively new option for me and I seem to have a hard time picking the right ones to listen to. I’ve had a few really good ones, but mostly have been meh to bad. However, this review makes me want to try this one on audio. I’m off to put the audio version on hold at the library! Thanks for the review.

I’m such a huge fan of this duo that this book was one of the very few on my preorder list. I was so excited when I got the email that I now own the book and if this week hadn’t been so insane I probably would have read it already. It’s up next though! So glad to see you enjoyed it – excited to listen!

that would be sad and scary at the same time, because you put an innocent person in jail and the real killer is still out there
