Sometimes growing up means facing your demons.

The son of a struggling single mother, Jamie Conklin just wants an ordinary childhood. But Jamie is no ordinary child. Born with an unnatural ability his mom urges him to keep secret, Jamie can see what no one else can see and learn what no one else can learn. But the cost of using this ability is higher than Jamie can imagine - as he discovers when an NYPD detective draws him into the pursuit of a killer who has threatened to strike from beyond the grave.

Later is Stephen King at his finest, a terrifying and touching story of innocence lost and the trials that test our sense of right and wrong. With echoes of King’s classic novel It, Later is a powerful, haunting, unforgettable exploration of what it takes to stand up to evil in all the faces it wears.

SUSPENSE thriller paranormal HORRIFIC

Narrated by Seth Numrich, Later by Stephen King, delivered a creepy tale about a young boy with a disturbing gift. A twisty tale that is part paranormal, part thriller King quickly drew me in.

Fans of King’s earlier works will love Later. This had an It or Joyland vibe to it. I loved the style and retro cover. We meet thirteen-year-old Jamie Conklin as he shares his secrets with us. It’s a coming of age story with a paranormal slant that will give you goosebumps. It’s magic and the type of novel only King can deliver.

He shares what happens when a man places bombs all over the city and Jamie ends up helping an NYPD detective. Does Jamie have a gift or will it open the door to evil? While the dominant theme is Jamie’s gift and the advice he receives and spirits he encounters, it also shares one women’s story of addiction and a struggling mom’s determination to raise her son. We see all of this from Jamie’s view.

Seth Numrich narrates and captured Jamie perfectly. I loved the narration from the pacing to the pitch as he shared Jamie’s emotions and fears through inflection. I hope he collaborates with King on more audios.

I am curious to see if we will meet Jamie again. In the meantime, don’t whistle. Later….

I highly recommend this one whether we listen to the outstanding audio or grab the book.

  1. Joyousreads

I want to read this one. I’ve been seeing it everywhere, and this year, one of my goals is to read more Stephen King. This one is shorter than his usual, so yes.

  2. Katherine

I’ve been wanting to read more King but his massive page counts always scares me off. This one looks like a good read! And now I’m kind of worried about whistling!

  3. Greg

I’ve never read King but I’m super curious about this one. Maybe it’s the retro cover partly, but also the idea of this kid being visited or whatever and helping to solve crimes. I just saw another good review for it too. Hmm…

This sounds nice and creepy! Great review, I look forward to reading this as I have not read Stephen King in awhile.

  5. Tyler H. Jolley

I loved Joyland, so this sounds perfect. I didn’t love If It Bleeds and almost DNF’d it. I’m glad this had earlier King vibes! Great review, Kimba!

  6. Nadene

This is rather short for a Stephen King book. ? I was curious about this one. Glad to know it was an enjoyable experience.
