I never expected I’d be one of those people who had a midlife crisis. Sure, I’m over forty, and married, but my kids are grown and moved out. Life is steady, if predictably boring.

That all changes when my husband asks for a divorce and my whole world crashes. Everything I thought I knew, everything I am, gone in an instant.
But I am not about to give up. After all, at my age, technically, I’m only halfway there.

I am ready to tackle my do-over; my chance to become the me I’ve always dreamed of. Starting with moving into my late grandma’s cottage and adopting a new kitten.

However, my new life is a little odder than expected. Old books suddenly appearing in my house. Neighbors going missing. A supposed lake monster, and a strange man who likes to skulk around with an axe.

I’m going to need to lean on my friends, new and old, to help me navigate my midlife crisis. Together maybe we will find a way to beat the family curse ruining my second chance at life.

In Halfway There, by Eve Langlais, Naomi is starting over. Finding yourself is complicated when the entire town thinks your ancestors set a powerful curse.

I’ve been working my way through the original thirteen in the paranormal women’s fiction genre and had Halfway There by Eve Langlais, the first book in the Midlife Mulligan’s trilogy was in my TBR pile. When a chance to listen to the audiobook narrated by Nicole Pool presented itself I jumped.

Naomi is in her forties and struggling with her new reality. Her ex, the man who dumped her, is making the change difficult. She will need to support herself, reconnect with her children and figure out who she is.

Circumstances have her moving back to Canada and into the lakeside home her grandmother left in a trust. She is shocked to find the house exactly as she remembered it. She’s excited to reconnect with a childhood friend, but the house is strange and she cannot shake the sinister vibes she feels.

A hot and annoying neighbor, rumors of a lake monster, and the town believing her family cursed them are only a few of the problems Naomi encounters.

When we arrived at the lake house and I wanted answers. I even had a few laughs as Naomi met the neighbor and townsfolk. However, the lake monster and Naomi’s lost childhood memories frustrated me, as did her friends who kept saying you aren’t ready to know yet.

I will say the story hooked me in the second half as the author revealed things to us and the villains emerged.

Nicole Poole did a magnificent job of capturing Naomi’s insecurities and struggles to define herself as she moved beyond the shadow of wife/mother. I’ve always enjoyed Nicole’s narrations and felt she enhanced the overall story.

While I didn’t completely love Halfway There, the second half of the story has me looking forward to the next audiobook in the Midlife Mulligan’s trilogy.

A monster, an odd lake house and hot neighbor are just some of the things Naomi is dealing with in Halfway There by Eve Langlais #audiobook #MidlifeMulligans #paranormalwomensfiction Click To Tweet

I like the way this book is going! I hope she sorts it all out to her advantage of course!

An excellent review, Kimberly – because in writing a thriller, there is always a fine line between ramping up the tension and just being annoyingly slow with the pacing… Glad that this one finally delivered, though!

Sorry to hear you didn’t completely love this one but I’m glad to hear it left you eager for the next one. I have a couple from the Paranormal Women’s Fiction set and I need to dig into them. Great review!
