Mercy Thompson, car mechanic and shapeshifter, faces a threat unlike any other in this thrilling entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

I am Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman.
My only "superpowers" are that I turn into a thirty-five pound coyote and fix Volkswagens. But I have friends in odd places and a pack of werewolves at my back. It looks like I'm going to need them.

Centuries ago, the fae dwelt in Underhill--until she locked her doors against them. They left behind their great castles and troves of magical artifacts. They abandoned their prisoners and their pets. Without the fae to mind them, those creatures who remained behind roamed freely through Underhill wreaking havoc. Only the deadliest survived.

Now one of those prisoners has escaped. It can look like anyone, any creature it chooses. But if it bites you, it controls you. It lives for chaos and destruction. It can make you do anything--even kill the person you love the most. Now it is here, in the Tri-Cities. In my territory.

It won't, can't, remain.

Not if I have anything to say about it

urban magical twisted well written

Smoke Bitten by Patricia Briggs is the twelfth Mercy Thompson novel and just as addictive as the first. Threats to the pack come in many forms and Mercy has her hands full. Intense, addictive, and twisted. I devoured Smoke Bitten.

If you ever feel you are having a bad day, just remember Mercy. M-kay? Her husband’s ex-creates issues on the daily, a pack is trying to take over their territory, something escaped from Underhill and is wreaking havoc and Adam and Mercy’s mating bond has gone silent. Oh, and Wulfe is stalking her. Just another typical week in the Tri-Cities. ?

I love Mercy. She is such a unique character and even though she married the Alpha; she continues to be herself. So much happens in Smoke Bitten I am already itching to do a reread!

The tale begins with a bang. We’ve got an issue with the pack, thanks to Adam’s ex, and an unwanted door ? has appeared in their backyard. Worse, it looks like something nasty has escaped. It’s fae, but nothing Mercy and the others have ever smelled. It was freaking fascinating and not something I’d mess with. Briggs wove in folklore, and I loved it. Before Briggs’ revealed all, I guessed who we were dealing with and fist-pumped air when it was confirmed.

Wulfe is present and integral to the story for a spell. I am so intrigued by him, and curious to learn more.

Since cutting off ties, it has left Adam’s pack vulnerable and an outside pack is attempting to take over the territory. This was interesting, and Briggs created some of the best scenes involving them. I loved Mercy’s phone call for advice. ☎️

Adam has cut off his mate bond with Mercy. This creates tensions in the pack. It is clear he is struggling with something and fears for Mercy. Of course, you all know how Mercy reacts! This was an intense thread, with interesting developments. I am still mad at Adam.

Smoke Bitten was fresh, delivered some developments that may change the dynamics of the pack and hooked me from the first pages. Perfect for fans of urban fantasy, shifters, supernatural creatures and snark.

*As with any urban fantasy, this series should be read in the order of its release.

Although I was really frustrated with how this one started, I found I was engrossed by chapter 3. I do love this series.

Excellent review! We’re doing the Read-along and you can join in at any point! I love this series and the reread is really helping me catch more details since my initial read was awhile ago, plus I’m reading them all closer together now for the later books.

This series has been on my TBR for ages and Mercy sounds like such a fun character! I’ll have to get the first book.

Yes, so much yes! I adored this so much even though the struggles between Adam and Mercy were hard because they’ve always been so strong together but still, I knew Briggs wouldn’t let me down.
