An electrifying work of literary suspense from international bestselling author Katrine Engberg, this stunning debut introduces two police detectives struggling to solve a shocking murder and stop a killer hell-bent on revenge.

When a young woman is discovered brutally murdered in her own apartment, with an intricate pattern of lines carved into her face, Copenhagen police detectives Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner are assigned to the case. In short order, they establish a link between the victim, Julie Stender, and her landlady, Esther de Laurenti, who’s a bit too fond of drink and the host of raucous dinner parties with her artist friends. Esther also turns out to be a budding novelist—and when Julie turns up as a murder victim in the still-unfinished mystery she’s writing, the link between fiction and real life grows both more urgent and more dangerous.

But Esther’s role in this twisted scenario is not quite as clear as it first seems. Is she the culprit—or just another victim, trapped in a twisted game of vengeance? Anette and Jeppe must dig more deeply into the two women’s pasts to discover the identity of the brutal puppet-master pulling the strings in this electrifying literary thriller.

MURDERMYSTERY CRIME SUSPENSE twisted

The Tenant by Katrine Engberg delivers a gritty police procedural that was thrilling and suspenseful. Perfect for fans of Nordic thrillers and the first to be translated in the Kørner/Werner series featuring Copenhagen police detectives; Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner. Grab your coffee we’ve got a murder to solve.

the skinny latte

Julie Stender is discovered brutally murdered in her own apartment. The killer has carved an intricate pattern of lines into her face. Copenhagen police detectives Jeppe Korner and Anette Werner are assigned to the case and soon begin looking for leads when robbery and rape are ruled out.

What unfolds is a clever, twisted case filled with red herrings that will keep the listener guessing.

the Americano…

Korner and Werner are an interesting pair. I often felt as if I were watching an old married couple working a case. They are very different but respect each even if they get annoyed. I can’t say I was overly fond of either, but the murder was the focus for me. I hope that as the series continues my feelings for them will alter. I felt as if we got to know Korner, flawed though he is.

The murder-mystery was rather clever, and I enjoyed the list of suspects. I confess I thought I had it all worked out early on… only to discover I didn’t, so pay attention.

Katrine Engberg delivers an interesting and well-developed case. The clues, pacing, characters, and twists pulled me in. Indeed, I was hooked from the start. The suspect list was a viable one and the clues, red herrings, and twists felt grounded as the author kept me working things out along with our detectives.

I have to mention the attention to details the author provided, from the characters’ mannerisms to the landscape. Having never been to Denmark, the author shared landmarks, buildings, neighborhoods and more bringing the area to life.

Graeme Malcolm did a lovely job with the narration, particularly with Korner and Werner. I hope he continues to narrate the series.

Dark, twisted and gritty, The Tenant was a well-plotted case that left me looking forward to the next audiobook and case.

I’ve been seeing this one and it’s been a while since I last read a police procedural. This one sounds really good and looks like a great way to get back to reading more of the genre since it’s a new series 🙂
