Harper Winston’s brother has disappeared. Pursuing his dream of sailing the Caribbean, Michael hasn’t responded to texts or emails in days. When even the Coast Guard can’t find him, Harper is forced to take desperate measures. Which means going to Chase Garrett, once her brother’s best friend, now the only man she can trust…or so she hopes.

As the successful owner of Maximum Security, Chase has learned to trust his gut. He knows Harper’s father is mixed up in a deadly business, and suspects there’s more to Michael’s disappearance than meets the eye. Getting involved again with the Winstons goes against everything he stands for, yet old loyalties die hard. As the case draws him closer to Harper and deeper into the Winstons’ snarled crime family, he is forced to put everything on the line to keep Harper safe…and both of them alive.

Brothers SUSPENSE ROMANCE CRIME

If you looking for a romantic suspense series heavy on the suspense with a touch of heat, then grab a copy of The Conspiracy by Kat Martin. It’s the first in the Maximum Security series, featuring brothers and it delivered.

Coffee Dates with The Conspiracy

  • First Date: Harper Winston’s brother has disappeared while sailing in the Caribbean. She is worried about foul play and hires her brother’s childhood friend even though there was a fallout between the families. Chase Garrett owns Maximum Security and knows Harper’s father is dirty. He suspects something is up and agrees to help Harper. (If only to keep her safe.) She has had a crush on him since she was a teen.  He knows he needs to keep his hands off her. But both are thinking about it and as they work to find Michael things heat-up.  I like the tension and I am curious to see how things unfold.
  • Second Date: We spend time in the Caribbean and other countries as they work to find Micheal. This was an intense case and Martin quickly pulled me in. For those who love stories that are heavier on the suspense and mystery you will find the details, twists and surprises welcome. Both Chase and Harper are likable characters and that helped pull me in. They are both strong, intelligent and fearless but sensible. Does that make sense?
  • Third Date: It surprised me when the case involving Michael wrapped up and we still had fifty percent to go, but oh boy did Martin bring on suspense and relationship complications as the DEA, FBI and local police become involved. Before it is all over, secrets will be revealed, someone will be arrested, and the relationship will heat up, even if it takes place off the page. Despite some made for TV scenes and escapes it was thrilling! Martin kept it grounded in plausibility (mostly).

I ended my dates with a smile and eager for more stories about the members of Maximum Security. While The Conspiracy was heavy on the mystery and suspense angle, it offered some great characters. I am looking forward to the next brother’s romance and case.

This one sounds good Kimberly. Great review, you definitely piqued my interest. I have read others by this author, so this sounds like it is right up my alley.

Sounds like a good suspenseful read. I like them if they have twists and turns, but I do like more than a touch of romance-or is that about the sexy times? I think I used to read this author way back in the 1980’s or 1990’s-can’t remember. I’m glad this delivered for you!

You know what appeals most to me about this novel right now? That is set in the Caribbean. I could use a tropical getaway even if it is via a book.

Bwahaha. I feel you. I have been working on my backlist and accepting very few new releases…. That could all change come spring!
