Born and raised as an assassin in the notorious Hunter program, Breed vampire Cain has since put his skills to use as a mercenary willing to clean up any problem for a price. Or so he thought. After a job in Las Vegas strains even his dubious code of honor, Cain pulls up stakes and lands in Miami for a much-needed break. All he wants is time away to clear his head and regroup, but then a beautiful young woman is nearly killed in front of his eyes and the ruthless former Hunter becomes the only thing standing between her and a sniper's bullet. Marina Moretskova is no stranger to dangerous men. As the niece of a Russian organized crime boss, she's grown up around killers and criminals. But her uncle wants out now, and he's enlisted Marina's help in buying his freedom by delivering valuable intel to a secret contact in exchange for protection. Not even Marina's bodyguards are aware of her mission, so when an attempt on her life is averted by a handsome, steely-eyed vampire, as grateful as she is for Cain's intervention, the last thing she needs is the shrewd Breed male nosing around for answers. Cain's cold, haunted gaze and merciless abilities attest to his brutal nature, yet the rough, solitary Hunter stirs a powerful longing in Marina that she can neither afford nor resist . . . Contains mature themes.

paranormal ROMANCE SEXY SUSPENSE

Hour of Darkness by Lara Adrian is the second audiobook in the Hunter Legacy series. This series is a spinoff of the Midnight Breed series that offers listeners suspense and romance while delivering plenty of heat and action.

Cain whose sense of honor despite his upbringing uproots himself from Las Vegas and moves to Miami, Florida. Cain a vampire breed who was born and raised as an assassin in the notorious Hunter program. He is longing for peace when he encounters Marina Moretskova as someone attempts to kill her. Marina is the niece of a Russian organized crime boss, who wants out of the business and has enlisted her to complete a mission that will buy his freedom. The last thing she needs is Cain, an overprotective Breed coming to her aid. The tale that unfolded was sexy, action-packed and full of feels.

We quickly discover Marina is a bloodmate, and this complicates things for Cain. The two have undeniable chemistry and as much as Marina protests she doesn’t need protecting, it’s quickly apparent she does. Cain is a trained killer, but there is this softer, pained side of him that will appeal to listeners.

Drama was kept low thanks to the intense suspense, but we see character growth as their relationship deepens. The final stretch of the story was intense as Cain works to save Marina and discovers exactly what losing her would mean.

Roger Wagner narrated again, and I loved his performance for Cain. He captured all sides of his personality which enhanced the story. His pacing is well done, however this story was told with dual POVs and I was not a fan of Mariana’s voice and accent. It felt forced and awkward. Thankfully, it wasn’t enough to hamper my enjoyment of the listen, but lets hope there are no more Russians in the series.

Fans of paranormal romance with heat, strong characters and plenty of suspense will find Hour of Darkness and the Hunter Legacy series a worthy listen.

This one sounds like a sexy paranormal. I haven’t been reading to many of them as I have been on a thriller/ya kick but this might change my mind. I might have to start with the first in the series tho. Great review!

I am glad there wasn’t too much drama because the plot keeps things exciting and moving forward. But yay for relationships and characters developing so well. I have to say I adore vampire stories but I can’t remember the last time I read one which wasn’t a Twilight series reread 😛

The narrator can make or break a book, when you’re listening to it. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the female P.O.V. – bad accents really are the most distracting thing in the world! I’m glad you mentioned this, as I often buy audiobooks for stories with foreign characters, because my imagination so often fails to do them justice!

I’m a huge fan of Adrian’s and have read or listened to all but one of the MB series – Dannika’s novella. I’ve also listened to the two books in this series and I’m not super impressed by it. The books are set in the same world yet some of the mythology previously set in the original series is missing in this one. For instance, while a blood scent is mentioned in this book it’s not explained that only breedmates have blood scents. And I’m not even sure if they were talking about a breedmate’s blood. I think I remember thinking at the time that it was human blood and therefore a continuity issue but I ‘m not sure. The scents of a breedmate’s blood is such a big deal in the main series that Adrian has used them as questions in giveaways. Another thing that is off is that the “father” of the hunters is referred to as an ancient in both books from what I can remember. Dude was an alien. Why isn’t that mentioned? The third thing that is weirdly missing from the Hunter Legacy books is the coloring of the Breed markings when the guys experience crazy emotion/hunger. It’s been brought up in at least half of the books in the main series. Specific colors not simply “flushed with color” .

Ok so yeah it may seem like I’m nitpicking since they are different series but shouldn’t some things carryover?

Maybe “not super impressed” isn’t an accurate description of my feelings. I like the series. I rated both books a 4. I just can’t help but wonder about the things that I mentioned.

I’ve put some thought into that. It might not be public knowledge that the ancient was an alien. The Order could have kept that part a secret. Just like the Atlantis/breedmate storyline that is going on in the original series atm. The world knows about breedmates but not where they come from so it makes sense that that wouldn’t be brought up in the books. However the “must cherish breedmates” viewpoint has been brought up in the HL books so why not the basic understanding of blood scents? Plus I would think the males would understand how their glyphs worked.

I really enjoyed the first book and liked when Cain appeared in the story. Need to get busy and keep going with the series.

I know I have a book by her sitting in my tbr pile and now I’m wondering if it’s book one in this series. I know that I wanted to read it, but as always I got sidetracked. Thanks for putting it back on my radar!
