With her inquisitive mind, Charlotte Holmes has never felt comfortable with the demureness expected of the fairer sex in upper class society. But even she never thought that she would become a social pariah, an outcast fending for herself on the mean streets of London.

When the city is struck by a trio of unexpected deaths and suspicion falls on her sister and her father, Charlotte is desperate to find the true culprits and clear the family name. She’ll have help from friends new and old—a kind-hearted widow, a police inspector, and a man who has long loved her.

But in the end, it will be up to Charlotte, under the assumed name Sherlock Holmes, to challenge society’s expectations and match wits against an unseen mastermind.

A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas is the first in the Lady Sherlock series and I’ve had it on Audible almost since its release. I also preordered the next two and yet they sat. When Because Reading issued a month-long challenge to read a series in a month I knew it was time. I am kicking myself quite thoroughly for having waited. Grab a peppermint mocha latte and see why you should begin them now….

Reasons to listen to A Study in Scarlet Women

  • Kate Reading narrates and beautifully captures the sassy, clever character of Lady Sherlock and the other characters we meet along the way. Her pacing, accents and tones were impeccable making listening a pleasure.
  • If you, like me are a fan of Sherlock Holmes be it novels, movies or television shows you will find Sherry Thomas’ approach to this iconic character to be refreshing and delightful!
  • Charlotte Holmes, with her propensity towards sweets, forthright attitude and clever mind is frustrated by the rules high society places on her. When her father breaks a promise she goes about procuring her freedom the only way she knows how. These events lead to Charlotte becoming Sherlock and you won’t want to miss it.
  • From the very first pages, I couldn’t help but root for Charlotte. I truly appreciated that we were afforded the opportunity to see aspects of her childhood. Thomas did a splendid job of fleshing her out. Charlotte much like the iconic man himself is social awkward, brilliant and extremely logical in all things but society expectations.
  • Hints of romance have me curious. It’s complicated but I am all in.
  • I loved the murder-mystery case. Both Charlotte’s father and sister are believed to be suspects. Pretending to be the sister of the ailing Sherlock Holmes, she works to solve the case. I became completely caught up and loved all the clever red herrings, twists and reveals.
  • Of course we have to have a Watson, and friends coming to Charlotte’s aid. Avid fans of the original character and series will love meeting beloved characters as imagined by this author.
  • Charlotte and her friends are irresistible. This is one of the best Sherlock Holmes stories I have read aside from the originals. I cannot wait to dive into the next audio.

Brilliant, clever and refreshing fans of Sherlock Holmes need to listen to A Study in Scarlet Women post-haste.

A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas was an original, refreshing gender-bender re-imagining of my favorite detective. The first in the Lady Sherlock series. #loveaudiobooks #Sherlock Click To Tweet

This sounds like a great series and I have been looking into reading it on Audible. I will have to do that as it sounds to good to pass up. =)

Enjoy Mary. Watch for when they do the big sale in January the one with all of last year’s deals of the day. I am almost certain this was one of them.

I peeked at your ratings but didn’t read the review. I have this on my Audible TBR shelf and almost picked it for next listen. Now maybe I will for sure with your recommendation.

  3. Lizzy

Oooh this one has been on my list for awhile now, and I’d forgotten all about it! My library has it but it’s checked out…hmm…

  4. Stefanie

Is this the one where she tells the pastor and his nosy wife how much she didn’t want to be a housewife? If so, I LOL’d at that part.
May have a post tomorrow. The mommy gig has been keeping me busy and very stressful.

Sweet. I expect you will be adding the third as well. These just get better and better. I devoured them all in November and now am left waiting for more?

  5. Angie Elle

I love the covers of these books. They are so eye catching. I’ve always felt like these books weren’t for me, but you’re making me want to read this one. LOL

    Great review.

The library Angie….if it’s not for you no biggie, but if you love it even half as much as I did then you won’t regret it!

  6. Anne

I love Sherlock Holmes and if you loved this then I probably will also. More to the TBR. It’s got a great cover. But tell me, she is Sherlock Holmes’ daughter? Who is his wife? Anne – Books of My Heart

I have to say your tweet of this one caught my eye and I had to come and check out your review! I absolutely love the title of this one and the idea of gender-bending the story. I read a Holmes novel and two of the short story collections this year and my opinions ranged from okay to dislike :/ But I think some retellings could do the story better so I might give this one a shot!

I can definitely second your lavish praise for this book and the characters. Great choice for the series challenge. I just finished The Hollow of Fear and shook my head with satisfied amazement at the fun twists that I never expected. I love that Charlotte remains consistent to her character, but also loved seeing the growth in all of them as time goes on. Can’t wait for the next release. Might have to try it in audio.

I have seen this series around, and I have read some great reviews for it. You have convinced me to see if I can get this from the library. Sounds like a terrific series. I love the original Sherlock Holmes.

Hmm! Sworn off starting any books that form a series unless I have them in the house already OR they are sent for me to review by an author/publisher. Whilst I do break this ‘rule’ from time to time I can’t see my making an exception for this book/series even though yours is a compelling argument for doing so.

I’ve owned this for awhile now, and I KNOW I need to get to it – I just keep hearing how wonderful the series is. I’m so glad you loved this one too. I might need to dive into this over my holiday break.
