Life was simpler for Grier when she was flat broke and a social pariah. Now she's carrying the baggage that goes along with the title of Dame Woolworth, and shouldering that weight is giving her a serious crick in the neck. Her work as a Haint is the one thing that makes her feel normal, but even that's more paranormal than usual. Spirits are vanishing from well-known hot spots on the ghost tour circuit, and vampires are turning up as shriveled husks. When Grier stumbles across the menace preying on Savannah's supernatural community, what she uncovers is bigger than a few flickering lampposts gone dark. It's a deadly threat unleashed by one of their own, and the cost of saving her city might be her life.

urban magical Kick Ass Heroine mystery

As soon as I finished How to Save an Undead Life, I dove into How to Claim an Undead Soul the second novel in Hailey Edwards’ Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy. This addictive tale brings a wraith, missing ghosts, stolen kisses and a devourer.

Grier, now Dame Woolworth has had her name restored and can learn the skill of a Necromancer. Her cousin, Linus has moved into the garage apartment to begin her training. The first order of business is protecting and reinforcing the wards on the house. Thanks to the discovery of Grier’s rare gift vampires are very interested in her. Despite Grier’s concerns regarding her Aunt’s influence on Linus, I liked him. He teaches at a college, makes a mean breakfast and his teaching methods inspire.

After the events of book one, Grier is housebound, more for her own protection but soon gets restless and attempts to get her job as a tour guide restored. After being a no-show her boss isn’t interested, but Grier worms her way in at the bottom of the totem pole and soon finds herself working aboard a haunted dinner boat. Here she encounters a ghostly young boy and barely escapes with her life. The ghostly entity warns that the devourer is coming and soon.

Savannah relies on hauntings from B&B’s to the tours, but strange oddities and disappearing ghosts soon have Grier, Boaz, and Linus investigating.

As if the disappearing ghosts isn’t problem enough Grier is soon dealing with a strange man, named Ambrose, appearing inside the wards. He creeps out Grier, and she worries about who or what he is. Could he be the devourer? Is Linus involved? You’ll have to read this twisted mystery to find out.

Meanwhile, Boaz is attempting to court Grier. Since Grier was incarcerated at sixteen, she has zero experience when it comes to dating. She is nervous, and while she has feelings for him, she wonders if it’s worth losing his friendship. I am enjoying this courtship and it helps balance out the darker more suspenseful aspects of this story.

My favorite aspect of this series is the magical house and Grier’s training. From wards to tats I am all in.

How to Save an Undead Life, was stronger, longer and more intense than the first book. This series is perfect for fans of magic, urban fantasy and suspenseful mysteries involving paranormal creatures.

The next book, How to Break an Undead Heart has released and sits on my Kindle.  I cannot wait to dive in!

love it that book two is even stronger. You mention so many great elements in these books. I’ll get the chance at some point.

I adore the magical house “Woolly”. The house is a lot of fun. If you have’t started book 3 – make sure to have tissues. I cried a lot. So much happens. Lots of growth and turning points for all. Great review. Love this series.

if a guy called Ambrose shows up in my house, i think i would probably try to exorcise it rather than talking it him =d
