K9 Officer Otto Gunnersen always had a soft spot for anyone in need. As Monroe's very own Dr. Doolittle, he dedicates himself to rehabilitating the injured souls that cross his path-but for all his big heart, he's never been in love. Until he meets Sarah Clifton's haunted eyes. Until he realizes he'll do anything to save her. All Sarah wants is to escape a life caught between ambitious crime families, but there's no outrunning her past. Her power-mad brother would hunt her to the ends of the earth . . . but he'd never expect Sarah to fight back. With Otto and the whole of Monroe, Colorado, by her side, Sarah's finally ready to face whatever comes her way.

SUSPENSE ROMANCE Small-town Law

Survive the Night by Katie Ruggle is the third book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. While each of the books contains a romantic couple’s story, there is crossover and an overall suspenseful thread that beckons to be read from the beginning. Suspense, cute animals, and a sweet romance made Survive the Night an enjoyable listen.

Coffee Dates with Survive the Night

  • First Date: Our story begins before Sarah Clifton makes a hair-raising escape from her former life and it was quite chilling. Sarah arrives to in Monroe, Colorado where she stays with Jules, Grace, and the kids. Otto is a member of the local police K-9 unit and perhaps the most swoon-worthy hero of the series to date. The man has a thing for animals, rescue animals in particular. He’s huge with a big old’ heart, and it was easy to fall for him. Sarah begins to get a taste of freedom before danger once again comes knocking.
  • Second Date: The suspense angle for this story was intense with tons of action scenes that kept me listening. Callie Beaulieu narrates the series, and I have come to enjoy her voices, pacing, and tone. She adds an extra element to the story pulling me in. All of the gang is here and bear witness to how smitten Otto is with Sarah. The romance was sweet and didn’t contain a lot of sizzle in part because of Sarah’s past. She is timid but its slow burn satisfied and felt genuine.
  • Third Date: Holy apocalyptic suspense. The last one-third of the book was non-stop action with scenes deserving of the cinema. Readers of the series were rewarded with some answers, and at first, I suspected this was the last book in the series, but a teaser at the end has me excited for Through the Fire which will release in August of 2018.  Survive the Night wrapped up nicely, leaving me with a smile even as my stomach did a belly-flop at the danger that is to come.

Survive the Night was an intense ride with a sweet romance and swoon-worthy hero. Kate Ruggle has become one of my go-to authors for romantic suspense.

I like Ruggle too. I’m not sure if I have any of this series on my TBR shelf but I will look to pick up the first book, maybe at Audible.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I like sweet romance reads but they never seem to captivate me for some reason. I feel like I just need more in a story. I do like that they had K-9’s in it. Great review. Now off to the next. I missed another week – with my Aunt, my sister – just everything. I always love reading your reviews tho.

Thank you! I am going to be reviewing a couple of times a month for Delighted Reader and also Hot Listens.

Now that I won’t be reading as much paranormal with Rabid Reads closing, I can read more romantic suspense. This one sounds good, especially with the animals. I’m a sucker for animals in a book, although if they get killed to ruins the whole thing for me. And again my latest review is not on your list. Weird.

I cannot believe they are closing down. Well, if you ever want to guest post let me know. I will find your post.

I think I read this one…I get them confused!! But, this one sounds familiar. Sounds like maybe I need to give the audiobooks a shot!

  6. Heidi

I listened to the first book awhile back. I enjoyed the dogs and the characters. I will have to continue this series when I get a chance.

I’m loving this series and the character’s, human and four-legged. Listening to this one right now so I skimmed past your review. So glad you like these too, Kim!

I recommend starting with book one. Simply because of overlaying arcs regarding the suspense angles.

I’ve yet to read anything by Ruggle but I feel like I see her books everywhere. Sometimes I enjoy a good romantic suspense and I like that each book focuses on a different book but has crossover. And Otto sounds positively dreamy! 🙂

I’ve been meaning to give this author a try but don’t even know where to begin! All of her books sound really good. All that suspense in the 2nd half of the book sound really exciting!
    Glad you enjoyed it, Kim!

I’ve been seeing this series around lately, they do sound interesting and fun and I like that they seem to have a lot going for them genre/entertainment wise.
