Death comes in many packages, and sometimes it comes in several at the same time...

Carmella’s obligation to the djinn is over, so why does the world feel a little bleaker? There’s barely time to ponder before a horrific massacre leaves her in charge of her first case with the IEPEU. Under the watchful eye of the organisation's top investigator, and with the help of her friends, Carmella must uncover the identity of the supernatural creatures behind the attack and expose the person pulling their strings.

If that wasn’t enough, her asura power chooses this case to surge to the surface. Now Carmella must quickly learn to master a force bigger than she could ever have anticipated. Because Carmella is on a hit list, and the person that wants her dead will do anything to uncover her weaknesses, except this time Carmella won’t be taken by surprise. This time she’s not going down without a fight.

Urban fantasy filled with action, hot romance and enough twists and turns to keep you flipping the pages. The Witch Blood Chronicles are a thrill ride you do not want to miss.

Defying Magick by Debbie Cassidy is the second novel in the Witch Blood Chronicles. Character growth, romantic complications and deadly betrayals combined with developments in our heroine’s powers delivered an intense, action-packed adventure.

Since the first novel, Carmella continues to search for her mother as she holds the key to who her father is and who bound her magic. She completed her training and accepted a position at the IEPEU the Iner-Entity Pact Enforcement Unit.

Carmella bears witness to a horrific supernatural massacre and is assigned to take the lead for the IEPEU. She’ll be under the watchful eye of a superior, but Carmella is determined to catch the culprits. Threats from the Dijinn, and her asura power emerging complicate things. Poor Carmella.

Our heroine is snarky, fouled mouthed and not afraid to jump into action mainly if a friend is in danger. That danger causes her asura form to materialize, and it was epic. I was thrilled to discover what she is. Carmella begins training even as the witches want to strip her of her magic. The girl has spirit though, and it’s her break out the tequila and kick some ass attitude that makes me smile.

The murder mystery was an intense one. Through it we watch Carmella grow as she faces disappointment, betrayal and struggles to master her skills. She surrounds herself with a group of friends, who aid her and before the story ends, she will add another.

There is a romantic thread with plenty of complications, but it’s served as a side dish. It will be interesting to see how Cassidy develops it.

Zehra Jane Naqvi narrates and provided an enjoyable narration. Her accent and rendering of Carmella capture her spunk, vulnerabilities and kickass moments.

The series is refreshing and deals with a lot of Hindu based beliefs, gods, and supernatural elements. I am looking forward to seeing Carmella come fully into her power and new role at the IEPEU. Each book deals with a new case to solve, but an overall arc concerning Carmella and her powers might make you want to consider reading these in order.

Fans of snarky heroines, mysteries and magic will want to check out Defying Magick and this action-packed series.

“Character growth, romantic complications and deadly betrayals” — sounds like a winning read. Thanks for the post.

So much to love, here- strong character, mystery, and exciting developments. The world around her sounds unique, too.

I must have missed the first one too. I did just go and buy it. I do love a snarky heroine. One question is why my latest review is not coming up in the list below? Just wondering cause it’s coming up on all the other blogs.

I have no idea why Lorna. Did it not give you options on which post to choose? Sometimes clearing your cache helps these things.

Hmm. I have no idea how to do that on my phone. All the other reviews from RR were there. No problem.

Hmm. That I am unsure of. I did test it in another browser and added my URL, it showed multiple posts to choose from. If you use Chrome on your phone, you can click at the top and clear cache. You can also clear from a laptop if synced and it will do both.

No chrome. But it’s okay. We’ll see if it does it next time. Thanks for checking for me. It just seemed weird.

I don’t remember reading your review of the first book so I must have missed it but I really like the sound of this series! I love a kickass heroine and I can tell from your review that she does a lot of maturing and character development is something I love to see – especially in a series. Gah! You’ve added another couple of books to my tbr today! 😉

if I have that many problems, I’d be snarky too and I won’t be using tequila to drink away my problems =d

Oh wow, an urban fantasy like this that deals with Hindu-based gods and beliefs sounds wonderful — I am so ready for more like that! Great review Kimberly!
