They called themselves “the lucky ones.” They were seven children either orphaned or abandoned by their parents and chosen by legendary philanthropist and brain surgeon Dr. Vincent Capello to live in The Dragon, his almost magical beach house on the Oregon Coast. Allison was the youngest of the lucky ones living an idyllic life with her newfound family…until the night she almost died, and was then whisked away from the house and her adopted family forever.

Now, thirteen years later, Allison receives a letter from Roland, Dr. Capello’s oldest son, warning her that their father is ill and in his final days. Allison determines she must go home again and confront the ghosts of her past. She's determined to find out what really happened that fateful night--was it an accident or, as she's always suspected, did one of her beloved family members try to kill her?

But digging into the past can reveal horrific truths, and when Allison pieces together the story of her life, she'll learns the terrible secret at the heart of the family she once loved but never really knew.

A vivid and suspenseful tale of family, grief, love—and the dark secrets that bind everything together—Tiffany Reisz’s latest is enthralling to the final page.

SUSPENSE thriller twisted well written

The Lucky Ones by Tiffany Reisz delivered a gothic suspense with a touch of romance and a creeptastic setting along the Oregon coast. Reisz is a masterful storyteller and quickly pulled me into this unsettling tale. Suspense, mystery, lies, secrets and more await you in this addictive tale.

In a nutshell, the Lucky Ones, shares the story of seven children who lived in the Dragon House, a beautiful home on the coastal shore of Oregon with their foster parent, Dr. Capello. Some of the children were adopted, and Allison expected to be one of them until she was whisked away under mysterious circumstances. Now twenty-five and at a crossroads, Allison receives a message from Roland, one of the boys Dr. Capello adopted. It seems the Doctor is dying and the note asks her to come.

The tale that unfolds shared a taboo romance and a suspenseful, gothic mystery that held me spellbound. When Allison was thirteen a fall down the stairs left her in the hospital with a memory gap. Was she pushed and who made the frantic call to her aging Aunt that caused Allison to be ripped from the home and people she loved? While saying her goodbyes and reconnecting with her siblings Allison begins questioning events around her mysterious fall. Lies, omissions and startling discoveries will make her question everything.

Reisz shares a chilling tale while exploring the human mind and the minds of sociopaths. She dabbles in scientific questions and theories while enlightening the reader on studies and experiments in the field. I have a macabre fascination with serial killers and sociopaths and found this exploration interesting. It also gave the story a bit of chilling realism.

I found myself connecting with the characters particularly the siblings. Secondary characters like Allison’s Ex added interest and humor while aiding her in her investigations. Reisz did an excellent job of introducing the siblings, casting doubt and evoking emotional feels from the reader.

The ending delivers answers and our main character makes decisions that will have the reader asking themselves what they would have done. The ending left me pondering the story for days after I closed the book.

The Lucky Ones is perfect for fans of twisty, suspenseful tales with complex characters. The pacing and romance allowed for a quick, engaging thriller.

Omigosh! I really can’t wait to get my hands on this one, Kimberly! I love the gothic feel and that Reisz delves into the minds of serial killers as well? It’s a win for me. 🙂

I’m the biggest fan ever of Reisz writing so I always want to read all her books! 🙂
She is definitely the queen of exploring the human nature so I’m not surprise she is so good at depicting the minds of sociopaths. Serial killers and sociopaths also fascinate me so I’m sure I’d love that about this book!

Completely agree, although I have not read her Original Sinners series, even though I own the first two books. But a few of her newer ones have made my top ten lists.

I would have waited for audio, but I had too many audios for review. LOL, I have to pick up a book once in a while. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

I guess I am in the opposite situation. I have so many review books to read that I need to stay focused but with audio, I just do whatever I want. It is incredibly rare for me to get an audio for review. I guess I am not on whatever list is used to offer audiobooks for review. I have a ton of audiobooks of my own to get through so it is not a worry.

Oh dang Kimba, I’m passing this on to my assistant. She’s getting ready for a vacation and asked for a good thriller. Any other recommendations? She loved Girl on a Train and Gone Girl 🙂

I am sorry you are in a funk. I DNFd a favorite author this weekend, and I know it was totally me, even said so but I could not for the life of me slip in.

I get fascinated with serial killer or psychopath characters and stories, too. The gothic tones and the darker story have great appeal. And… I still need to try a Reisz book.

This is on my list of things I want to read. I’m so glad to see that you liked it. It sounds utterly fascinating – and I find serial killers and sociopaths intriguing as well.

I love that you described this as being a gothic romance because that really was what it felt like. Like the setting and house were characters of their own as well.

Sounds so chilling, Kim! Perfect for Valentine’s Day hahahaha!
But I just read Lexxie’s review too and she adored it as well, so I’m so curious about this one now because of both your reviews.

Did you and Lexxie planned this? I just read her review, and she likes it, though a little different in opinions as yours.
