The creator of the Toot & Puddle series brings us Elmore--the warmhearted porcupine sure to steal the hearts of a new generation of Holly Hobbie fans!

Elmore is a porcupine desperate to make friends. But it is hard to seek closeness with others when you're covered with spikes that shoot off your back every so often. Elmore suffers rejection and heartbreak, but the goodness of his forest community ultimately shines through as the animals find a way to connect with this prickly bundle of love.

Holly Hobbie is the creator of the beloved Toot & Puddle series and now brings us a character for the next generation. Just as charming, funny, and good-hearted as her little pigs, Elmore the porcupine will snuggle and prickle his way securely into the picture-book canon.

Despite the prickles, the Royals ( my grandchildren) and I delighted in this heartfelt tale about Elmore the porcupine and his desire to have friends. It’s hard finding friends to play with when your prickly and accidentally shoot spikes when you get excited. Hobbie shares how the forest critters look for ways to be friends with Elmore and still be safe. The illustrations are sweet and full of expressions allowing young readers to follow along. I absolutely loved the message about differences and the solutions found within this tale.

The Princess (age 3) loved Elmore and now wants a porcupine. Despite the difficulties we faced with an unbound ARC, she quickly began to read the story to me using the images as her guide. My heart melts when she begins with, “Once Upon A Time…” As for the Prince, this is above his age level, but he snuggled in to listen making this a great bedtime read.

This is a fantastic story for small groups and allows for discussion as children can offer their solutions to Elmore’s problems. I look forward to more adventures with Elmore.

I didn’t know publishers gave out unbound ARCs. Is it just for picture books?

It is the whole book without any binding. It is ungodly hard to work with when reading to small children. All the pages are loose inside the hardcover sleeve. Would you believe I tested positive for the Flu on Tuesday? Type A. Ugh. I am on Tamiflu now. 2018 has been hellish. On the positive side, my pneumonia is clearing up.

That is so interesting. It truly has to be difficult to get through and keep in the pages in order.
I can ABSOLUTELY believe you tested positive for the flu. You’ve been so sick. I’m so sorry, but very happy to hear you are on the path to recovery. I can’t believe you are still blogging through it. The flu this year has been horrible.

This is such a cute story! I seem to vaguely remember reading a similar book when I was a child. Now I’ll be racking my brain all day trying to remember what it was!

SOOOOO flippin’ adorable! Of course, I’M a sucker for any story about differences and understanding those with them. Tell the Princess that porcupines ROCK!! And bravo for handling the unbound ARC! Those pages do get messy and hard to handle, even for adults 😉
