Grim Reaper Charley Davidson is back in the twelfth installment of Darynda Jones’ New York Times bestselling paranormal series.

Ever since Reyes escaped from a hell dimension in which Charley accidently trapped him, the son of Satan has been brimstone-bent on destroying the world his heavenly Brother created. His volatile tendencies have put Charley in a bit of a pickle. But that’s not the only briny vegetable on her plate. While trying to domesticate the feral being that used to be her husband, she also has to deal with her everyday life of annoying all manner of beings—some corporeal, some not so much—as she struggles to right the wrongs of society. Only this time she’s not uncovering a murder. This time she’s covering one up.

Add to that her new occupation of keeping a startup PI venture—the indomitable mystery-solving team of Amber Kowalski and Quentin Rutherford—out of trouble and dealing with the Vatican’s inquiries into her beloved daughter, and Charley is on the brink of throwing in the towel and becoming a professional shopper. Or possibly a live mannequin. But when someone starts attacking humans who are sensitive to the supernatural world, Charley knows it’s time to let loose her razor sharp claws. Then again, her number one suspect is the dark entity she’s loved for centuries. So the question becomes, can she tame the unruly beast before it destroys everything she’s worked so hard to protect?

2017 fave urban must-read Humor mystery

The first thought I had when I ended The Trouble with Twelfth by Darynda Jones was OMG I have to wait a whole year for the final book!! For fans, this will be the longest year, for those not yet in the Charley Davidson fandom, you have a whole year to catch up. That is one book a month..totally doable.

The Trouble with Twelfth picks up right where Eleventh Grave In Moonlight left off. Reyes insisted on doing a dangerous task, got trapped and now has returned. Only he is all smoke and brimstone. Charley being Charley tries to fix it while juggling her PI work, helping Amber and Quentin start their own detective agency and save the world. Yep, we are going to need coffee, lots and lots of coffee.

Charley finally reaches out to Garret and confesses that Reyes has gone feral. Together with Osh, they come up with a plan.  No pressure, oh and God intends to send an army to end Reyes. I loved seeing Charley take on God, come up with a plan to save her husband and juggle multiple murder cases. I swear she never sleeps and still manages to find humor in everything from naming boobs, to tormenting Osh.

For fans, we were rewarded with new tidbits, and some were jaw-dropping. Still, others made me laugh until I had tears. Feral Reyes and Charley Tango as she tries to devise plans to bring him back. It was both frustrating and seriously hot. Nothing with these two is ever dull.

Jones brought a mix of emotions forth from me as I read. I laughed, grasped my e-reader, held my breath, and cried. Scenes with Garret were hilarious, some freaky and oh my gosh moments but I loved them. Osh continues to be a favorite, but he was pretty subdued.

The story was fast-paced, and I enjoyed all of the different threads from Charley helping a friend to events concerning a few spirits. I tried to savor the story, even forced myself to set it down, but still devoured it.  I think that only happened because I knew we would get another cliffhanger..and we did. The story came together brilliantly but Lord I need the next book now!

The next book will be the final book in the Charley Davidson series, and I plan to read it while sequestered. I am planning a survival kit now. October 2018 cannot get here soon enough! You have a year to catch up..now grab all of the books. I am planning to listen to one book a month beginning in November.

Loved this book so much I finished it in less than 24 hours. I devoured it. I hate that the next book is the last one. I want to read it so bad but then I don’t because I don’t want this series to end!

What?? Heck yes, you need to read this Carole! Brilliant, hilarious and the characters over some of my favorites.

  3. Laura Thomas

I have the first 3 books. I figure I’ll try to read one a month like you suggested. yeah…right! LOL I’ll probably gobble them up and go buy the rest all at once.

Mmmm….. wait for audio from library or use Audible credit. I think I’ll wait for the library copy and save that credit for something I can’t get from the library. LOL

Oh my glands yes! I was all over the place with this one from laughter to nearly tears. I’m not sure I can handle it that we are on the last book… though there is Beep and Osh still. 🙂

    Great review, Kimberly!

I love that you adore this series! I hate it when I have to wait a whole year for the next installment in the series. Probably one of the biggest reasons why I marathon TV shows. (especially The Walking Dead)

  9. Heidi

I held off reading this because I had to have the audiobook version which I just got today. I am excited to hear there is lots of Garret. I adore Garret.

Oh my goodness…I wish I could watch your face when you listen..lol. I am beginning a re-read via audio.

I’ve heard such awesome thing about this series! And it’s always so impressive when a series remains so strong after a dozen books. Kudos to the author for managing to keep it fresh and exciting. Waiting for the next (final) book is so hard! I felt that way after finishing the most recent book in The Others series a few months ago. At least I dont have to wait another year like you… only till March. 🙂

I really need to pick this series back up. I think I read the first two, maybe three but really liked them. Hope you find the final book a satisfying conclusion,

    • Kimberly

Not that I haven’t said so in my review, but you have plenty of time to catch up before the final book *winks*

I can’t believe we have to wait so long to see what happens next. I know either way, I won’t be ready for this fabulous series to be over.
