The sole witness to a horrific crime, Kaylee Ramay flees to the Colorado Rockies to start a new life. There she becomes Grace, a dog kennel employee desperately trying to avoid attention-especially from dangerously attractive K9 Officer Hugh Murdoch. Because Hugh is tall, dark . . . and nothing but trouble. Hugh is anxious to get back in the field after an act of heroism left him warming the bench. Until then, he and his K9 partner Lexi spend their hours teasing the town's mysterious newcomer. But when their simmering attraction is nearly cut short by a sniper's bullet, Hugh's mystery woman must come clean about the secrets she keeps . . . Or both of them will pay the price.

Auto-Buy SUSPENSE ROMANCE

I’ve found myself slightly addicted to Kate Ruggle’s romantic suspense series from their overall plots to the quirky loveable characters. On The Chase, is the second novel in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series narrated by Callie Beaulieu. Suspenseful with a touch of humor Ruggle quickly had me caught up in Grace and Hugh’s story.

While each of the books works as a standalone and feature a new couple, there are overall story arcs that make reading these in order more meaningful.

Kaylee Ramay, now Grace escaped from a horrific scenario, but the perpetrator has power and connection forcing her to assume a new identity in Colorado Rockies. She finds herself sharing the house with Jules and her siblings. We meet them in Run to Ground, and like Grace, they are hiding from their past. This is why I feel you will want to read Run to Ground first and meet Jules and K9 Officer Theo Bosco. Theo’s quirky partner, K9 Officer Hugh Murdoch can spot a lie a mile away, and he is obsessively curious about Jules’ new roommate. He begins to investigate but soon feels as if he is being watched.

Ruggle delivered a suspenseful, action-packed tale that kept me listening. I teetered between laughing at the chemistry developing between these two and holding my breath at the danger they found themselves in. Theo’s K9 Lexi stole scenes. I love the animals in this series and feel they add depth and broke up some of the tension. I adored the comradery between Hugh, Theo, and their dogs, especially in action.

The romance was solid and delivered passion, banter and moments of humor. Hugh cracked me up on more than one occasion and the man makes for s sexy hero in uniform. Grace is smart, sassy and determined. However, I must warn you, despite all the happened to her, don’t expect to get all warm and fuzzy over her. She will grow on you and those feelings will strengthen throughout the story, but in the beginning, some of her complaints left a sour taste in my mouth. This could be just me, as I have zero tolerance for whiners.

We get updates on previous threads and couples. I am quite smitten with Jules’ siblings and some action scenes involving them were brilliant and humorous. Overall, ON THE CHASE was another fantastic novel in the K9 Rocky Mountain Unit series.

Callie Beaulieu continues to narrate, and I enjoy her narration. Her pacing is right, and I can quickly identify characters by the voices she creates. She and Ruggle are well matched.

Fans of small-town romance and suspense will enjoy On The Chase and Katie Ruggles brand of romantic suspense.

This sounds like an interesting series. I’m not a dog person but I really love service dogs, they’re just so intelligent and it’s amazing what they can do (even fictional ones!) I think I’ll have to give the first one in this series a go for sure 🙂

  2. Rachel

Even though I agree that it took a while to warm up to Grace, I still loved this one, too. Katie Ruggle has fast become a fav romantic suspense writer for me. Wonderful review, Kimberly! 🙂

I have zero tolerance for whiners too, glad that didn’t ruin the rest of the book for you! This definitely sounds like a good series to get in to. Lovely review, Kim!

I liked this too. I will have to pick up book one. I have another Ruggle on my Audible TBR. Always a good read/listen.

Great review! Glad to know about the story arcs. I like to know about all the characters’ background. Not a fan of whiners either, but we have to give them the benefit of the doubt, right? 🙂

I just got the two books in my mailbox last week. Got the audibles and can’t wait to get started. I skipped over your review but so glad you enjoyed it, Kim! I went with these because of you:)

I’ve been hearing great things about this series and now I might just have to read it for myself.

I agree that the dogs and the kids steal the show often, but the rest of the story is a fun suspense plot, too. Can’t wait for Otto’s story. 🙂

I too have seen this author around and I enjoy a good romantic suspense, and even though I would never want a dog or a cat or… I love it when animals are included in a book in a way that enhances it.

I love everything I’ve read about this series! I love a good romantic suspense – especially when both aspects of the romance AND the suspense are done well which isn’t always the case. And seriously who can resist a man in uniform? I’m really looking forward to starting this series.

I’ve had my eye on this series. I think I have book one in eBook. Thank’s so much for the review. I’ve lately been audio booking, so maybe I’ll have to give the series a try that way.

I’ve been having headaches (migraines) more lately and reading is just out of the question when I do, so I’ve found that I can audio and get my reading fix in that way. Audio has really opened up a whole new world for me. ^_^

Just bought her book a few days ago, Kim. It’s currently on sale and I have heard great things about this series. Yay, glad that you enjoyed it. I can’t wait to start it. I wish I could afford to buy the audiobook though. My book budget is tight this month. Awesome review, my friend. ❤️
