Favorite Tropes

I am trying to add more discussions and caffeinated confessions here at Caffeinated.  So I decided it would be fun to discuss some of my favorite tropes in romance.  Next time I will share tropes that make me run the other way. Grab a cup of your favorite caffeinated beverage. I am enjoying an iced vanilla coffee. Check out my favorites and then tell me some of yours.

Favorite Romantic Tropes

  • Enemies to Lovers | Haters to Lovers-  This is one of my favorites as it usually begins with snark and witty banter followed by sizzling chemistry.
  • Arranged Marriage |Fake Engagement | Marriage of Convenience –I adore any kind of arrangement involving a relationship or marriage that starts out all level headed and with a seemly sensible plan. I love watching it all unfold and develop into something more.
  • Friends to lovers-  I adore that moment when one of them realizes they are in love with their friend. The stories usually have some humor. The couple’s closeness makes the romance all the more believable.
  • Mail-order bride- I am a romantic at heart and love mail order bride stories, mostly historical. I love the adventure, awkwardness and seeing them work together.
  • Parent/childcare worker -In which I mean, single, sexy Dads. An involved parent is super sexy to me and the kids inevitably melt my heart.
  • Military|Law enforcement- Nothing makes me click more than a romance involving a man in uniform especially military men. These men tend to be strong, confident and capable.
  • Cowboy- I have a weakness for cowboys. These strong, hard working and sexy men tend to have strong family values, respect the land and know how to two-step.
  • Best friend’s sibling This is usually a fun trope and one I consider romcom. Usually, it involves a younger sister and I love the struggle, especially if she expresses interest.
  • Matchmaker- I love meddling secondary characters from family to friends. Some of the best are well meaning Auntie, siblings and those delightful Mamas.

Yes! Someone else who loves a cowboy! Ha. Have you read The Contract by Melanie Moreland? That’s one of my favourite fake engagement stories x

  2. Berls

I’m not much for the cowboy or the military tropes, but other than that LOVE! I personally fell for the Parent trope IRL. I tell my husband all the time that one of the main reasons I fell for him was because he was an awesome dad. Nothing sexier 🙂

  3. Lover Of Romance

You pretty much listed most of my favorites as well. I adore mail order bride and cowboys too!! And then I really love arrange marriages or marriage of convenience, so dang good to see a couple make a marriage work under those circumstances.

  4. Darlene

From the ones that you have listened, I think the enemies/friends to lovers one is my favourite. I’m not really a fan of military men, My personal favourite is second chance romances.

Great list and discussion topic, Kimberly!

  5. Sam

It’s romance. I love all the tropes! I love alphas in books, but not in real life, but my fave is second chance lovers.

  6. Katherine

I love a marriage of convenience and a best friend’s sibling. Those are 2 of my absolute favorites. I really need to read more mail order brides. I’ve typically read only British historical romances and they don’t really have those. I need to try out some American historicals.

    • kimbacaffeinate

I love traveling to all the rural cities and farmland with the mail order brides. There is a series where each book is in a different state. American Mail Order Brides

  7. Lily B

my fav have to be hate to love romance XD I love the back and forth it really makes the story for me. The arrange marriage is good too. That is probably my second favorite. Forbidden love romances are also awesome

  8. Kathy

Great list!! I especially like the best friend sibling tropes, I guess since I had crushes on my brothers friends (but nothing happened lol). It has been a while since I’ve read a historical mail-order bride story. Do you have any recommendations?

    • kimbacaffeinate

Most recently I read, Morning Comes Softly by Debbie Macomber but there is a series I read mostly from the library called American Mail Order Brides. There are a ton of them, and some were fantastic. Each takes place in a different state. You can find some great ones in the Christian section as well, most aren’t preachy, but have nice period detail,

  9. Lorna

I like a lot of these but not cowboy. Or military honestly. I bet love triangle is going on your dislike list. Love this discussion post!

  10. Michelle

I enjoy most of these as well! Military is probably one of my favorites, though enemies to lovers is another I adore.

  11. Suzanne

Enemies to lovers is probably my favorite. Along the lines of your military/law enforcement trope, I also really enjoy spies/CIA/FBI agents.

  12. Carole

I like all of these too. I think that I am usually pretty easy to please as long as the characters have great chemisty. I can live without love triangle though.

  13. Julie

Oh man, I love so many of these. I’ve actually never tried to mail order bride ones. I will have to give those a try sometime. I haven’t been too excited about the cowboy ones lately. I think I went a little too crazy with them for a while and burned myself out on them. haha! So me and cowboys are taking a bit of a break. I love all of the others tho. Great list!

Julie, I did that with Historical Romances for five years I devoured them almost back to back, before burning out. Now five years later I am weaving them in again and loving them. I’ve changed my reading and never read the same genre back to back, and no series binging. I read one a month from a series, allowing time in between. Mail Order is fun, although most tend to have a Christian theme, As long as they aren’t preachy I don’t mind.

  14. Sophia Rose

All those would make my list, too. I don’t know if its a trope, but I do love a romance where one or both of them have fun and quirky family involved in matchmaking them.

  15. Kathryn

Love your post and reading through all the tropes I was nodding my head to each. I find I like especially one where parent is involved with children, it adds a twist I love.

  16. Rowena

    I love single Dad’s too, Quinn! 🙂

Some of my favorite tropes are listed so we have a lot of the same tastes in books, Kim. I love friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, best friend’s siblings or siblings best friend, those are my jams!

  17. Tami

Love the “man saves the woman who doesn’t really need to be saved” An example would be Saving Grace by Julie Garwood.

  18. Marissa

I am total sucker for a match maker… especially when said matchmaker stumbles across love themselves and doesn’t realize it right away!

  19. kindlemom1

I see some of my favorites here as well! I love the enemies to lovers (the tension!) and best friends to lovers has always been a favorite of mine. I think all good relationships should start out that. 😉 I love the younger sibling angel too though, that one can be pretty fun too.
    Great confessional Kim!

  20. Beks

I love the enemies to lovers trope. Unfortunately, I can’t write it worth a darn. Jane Austen made it look so easy!

  21. Nick

    Love this!
Marriage of convenience and hate to love are two of my favorite tropes. I feel like we don’t see enough of friends to more romances, and I need that to change!

  22. Steph

This is a great topic – you often read about tropes people dislike so it is refreshing to read some liked ones. I too am a fan of the Friend/Enemy – Lovers romances…

  23. Nadene

I enjoy all of those you have mentioned.. I also enjoy teacher/student. The student must be of the appropriate age..
