Sunday Post

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted here @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog and showcase books and things we have received. Share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. See rules here: Sunday Post Meme

What a crazy week. Hubby returned to work Tuesday and Wednesday my daughter came down with the stomach virus. Eep. Lysol is my friend! I had some issues with folks using my Caffeinated stack of books and coffee cup image and frankly it pisses me off. Thank you to those who alerted me to the issue.  I am amazed how folks do not seem to understand copyright. Just because an image is on Google doesn’t mean it’s free use. There are plenty of free and cheap sites to obtain images.  I will say most didn’t hesitate to remove images and were honestly sorry. I did have to fill out a DMCA form for one blog that was unresponsive. It made my caffeinated mood turn ugly. Someone even used it for a free book..seriously? I will be doing a post about discussion post about images.  Look for that post in early May and for goodness sake..stay caffeinated my friends!

Bleh, I’m sorry you had to deal with that. I feel like a crash course in image usage and fair-use/creative commons images should be mandatory for authors and bloggers (really anyone). I’ve seen a few books with covers featuring art of video game characters…and I debated on sending the author a message telling them about it before some game company decided to sue them.
I hope this week is much better for you Kimba, and I hope you can manage to avoid the bug going around your house.

You are even prettier than usual this morning, Kim 😀 😉
So sorry you had to deal with people using your images! I don’t think anyone can really say they don’t understand that images are the same as words, and it sucks that you even had to prepare a DMCA notice to one blog.
Your new books look so good, and I hope you’ll enjoy them.
Have a spectacular Sunday, a fantastic week ahead and happy reading!

*lifts shot glass and smiles* Most of the violators were outside of the US, so I am unsure. The language barrier makes it difficult. Yeah..filling out that paperwork stinks..but they weren’t being cooperative and it is what it is. Enjoy your Sunday..23 days Lexie, 23 DAYS!!

    Ha! Love the tequila meme!

Thanks for flagging my post – much appreciated.

And sorry you’ve had a pretty rotten week! Hope your daughter’s all better and glad you mostly got your copyright issues sorted!

Glad to hear Hubby felt better and returned to work. but sorry about your daughter 🙁
Last week my hubby was very sick and that reminded me of the comment I left for you… “in sickness and in health” NOT! LOL I slept in the sofa for 4 days! Lysol! many yeses!
UGH about people using your image Kim. Glad to hear most were responsive and apologetic looking forward to your discussion post!

    • kimbacaffeinate

I am still standing Daniela…the power of avoidance and Lysol works! I was really surprised that they didn’t understand images on Google aren’t free for use…

  5. Nick

I’m sorry to hear about the stolen graphics, Kim, but glad that you were able to get the people to remove them.
I love the cover for Paper & Fire. Now I need to read the first book already!
Happy reading and have a lovely week!

Those who responded removed it immediately. Now I need to follow up on others. What a pain in the arse Nick. If I ever have another image made I will watermark it..because filling out the paperwork to take a site down until they remove it…is a serious pain in the ….

Oh yes I love the cover of Paper & need to read the first book!!

  6. Greg

Yikes not cool. Seems like it would be hard to miss the fact that it’s YOUR image. Hope the stomach virus doesn’t make the rounds of the household. 🙁

Love that quote- yes tequila seems to make everything look so nice doesn’t it? lol. Have a great week!

You would think, but a lot were from countries outside the US. I had to translate pages from Poland, Spain etc. He-he..yeah tequila does make everything look better and shiny 🙂

  7. Berls

I’m sorry about your images 🙁 I bet most of them had no idea they were doing something wrong – doesn’t change the frustration and hassle. And I think it’s our responsibility to educate ourselves if we’re going to have a blog and especially if you’re going to publish a book! Plus, they should just think about it… would they want someone to use their images?! I hope the unresolved ones work out soon!

Just 23 days until BEA! Can’t wait to meet in person!! SQUEE!!!

I hope your daughter is feeling better! The stomach flu is not fun. 🙁 I’m sorry you had trouble with people stealing your images. I imagine it happens more than we realize. I make a point of using either free images, my own, or getting permission when necessary.

I hope you have a better week!

I can’t believe someone used your image! It surprises me how images we use on our blog can be found on Google. I came across my images when I was looking for something and I was shocked. I hope that blog takes it down.

I think any image you post ends up on Google and sadly folks seem to think it is there for the taking. Most were from other countries, some blogs have been inactive for a while and others used it for challenge banners etc. Annoying really.

    • kimbacaffeinate

Yes, they spent two days doing poor little logo was covering more male junk then I could count. Gads. My daughter recovered much quicker than my hubby..the power of youth!

  10. Annemieke

Ugh I hate when people don’t seem to understand copyright. Back when I was still active on Deviantart I had some of my drawings put on some kind alternative instagram site. And lots of images from tumblr people keep popping up on instagram. I don’t understand the need to post pictures there that aren’t your own anyway. What is the fun in that?

  13. Ramona

Oh, wow, that sounds unbelievably rude – not to mention, illegal! On the other hand, did you HAVE to create such desirable images, Kimba??? 😀 Of course people would be tempted! But, no, seriously, I think the problem is just what you state, namely they don’t understand copyright. Don’t let them get away with it! Looking forward to that post, my friend.

  15. Hayley

I hope your daughter feels better soon. I’m sorry that you’ve had people using your blog image, it’s terrible how people think it’s ok to take whatever images they like from search engines. I hope you can get the image taken down on the blog that was unresponsive.

Hope you stay healthy and don’t succumb to the same stomach bug!

  17. Kristen

What a coincidence, I was literally contemplating doing a post about images and copyright and all that because I feel like a lot of people don’t actually realize that you can’t just post images that you find, even with credit. But using it on a book? That person really should’ve known better. Anyway, I’m happy to hear you’ve got that post covered as now I won’t have to do it, haha. But sorry to hear about the problems with your image! Sounds frustrating.

I did a blog post about this a while back; you can check it out here and share it if you want Stock Images: What you need to know I know several bloggers who have gotten themselves in legal trouble for using images they find on google. Really sorry about someone stealing your images. That’s frustrating. It is amazing that people either don’t understand or just don’t care. Glad you were able to get it taken care of. I’m avoiding everyone this time of the year where the weather can’t decide to be warm or cold because everyone seems to be sick. I’ll likely spray Lysol in your face if you get to close to me. LOL I hope you have a great week. I finally have sun and warmer temps, so I think Spring as finally arrived and I’m going to take full advantage. 🙂

  21. Jessica

Oh that’s horrible about the images. I honestly don’t understand all the Google image backlash. I try to just use Wikipedia images myself…hoping even that’s okay. But I know other images get used that aren’t Wiki. I’d love to know where these sites with free images are just so I don’t step on any toes unnecessarily! Sorry to hear about these woes! And on top of the sickness still being around. Stay safe my friend!

Yay new books though! Lots of new to me ones! I sadly couldn’t get into Rachel Caine’s latest series. I wanted to because I adore her books, though still never read her YA series. But loved Weather Wardens and really wanted to like that one, but it just didn’t mesh well with me I guess.

    Happy Reading!

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had trouble with people using your graphic — how annoying and frustrating! Especially given the time you had to spend getting people to take the images down. I guess I’m lucky; I haven’t had any trouble with my little dragon that I know of so far (knock wood.) I hope your post will tell us how to get that little “DCMA protected” thing at the bottom of your page!

I hope your daughter feels better soon. Stomach flu is nasty stuff.

I’m in suspense waiting for your “images” post!!! 🙂

Not fun to find out others are using images you paid for, Kimba. Kind of hard to believe people still just use images they find on google. I hope this is the end of that problem for you. Good idea to write a post about it.

I swear by Lysol! I had the flu and my son never got it. LOL Though he did avoid me like the plague. Glad your hubs is all better and your daughter is on the mend too. Such lovely images you create, I guess some people couldn’t resist. Though, by now, bloggers should know it’s WRONG! I’ve not had an image stolen but I did come across a review so similar to mine and I went back and checked to make sure my review was posted first. It was. I wonder how often that happens.

    • kimbacaffeinate

Thank you Michelle. The ones that pissed me off, were those who slightly altered the it makes me think they know about copyright.

  26. Melissa (My words and pages)

Oh my. Hope your daughter gets well soon, and the little one doesn’t get it next!

You know, with all the copy-write things, I’m not sure what’s able to be used and what’s not any more. I cringe when I use an image as I just don’t know. I’d like to think most people are easy and willing to respond with apologies and to take it down. But some one using it as a free book cover? That’s new.

Hope you have a great week.

    • kimbacaffeinate

Always visit free image sites, check copyright usage law on image or buy them at vectorstock or dollar images etc. Thanks Melissa 🙂

Sorry to hear about the illness sweeping your family– ugh! Too bad.

Also too bad that people just lift images from google and think they’re fair game. It’s why I only use my own, or my son’s, photos on my blog. I don’t borrow images or pics because I don’t want to deal with the possibility that the “free image” wasn’t really free. I’m happy enough with what I have.

I am going to read A Reason to Stay this week, so I’ll only skim your review when it publishes this week. I hope to enjoy it– sounds good and like something I need right now.

I’m interested in Heather Graham’s newest, and the cookies cookbook looks downright yummy! Have a good week and hope you don’t catch the flu bug also!

That’s nasty your daughter got the stomach bug after your husband got better, i hope you don’t get it! And I am sorry to hear about someone using your images and I am glad they removed them without much trouble. It’s a good topic for a post as so many people still grab images for google. I am always very careful with which images I use on my blog, usually only covers, designed for me images or photo’s I took myself.

Glad your hubby is back on his feet, but bummer about dear daughter. Yes, Lysol is the hero.
Bummer about the stolen graphics. A few years ago, I remember feeling awful that I had someone’s pic when they contacted me. I had to show them that it was up on a free site. Now I am careful about what ‘free image’ sites I use.
Nice haul. I have a Jude Devereaux for review, too- different title.

Glad to hear everything (mostly) worked out with your copyright issues. Nothing’s worse than when someone tries to take ownership of something that’s yours. I went through something similar when someone lifted one of my reviews yea ago when I wrote for another site, and then passed it off as theirs. Word for word 🙁 The only change was there was no source, and my name was removed. So glad you were able to have a recourse to your solution, even if it wasn’t a pleasant one.

  32. Mandy

Sounds like you have had a crazy busy week between everyone being sick and people photo-napping your images. Hopefully this week will be better, fingers crossed for a speedy recovery. Lysol happens to be my friend when everyone is sick too. I hope you have a better amazing week!!!!!!!! I hope you enjoy your new books!!! Hugs!!!

I, too, got approved for Paper & Fire. I was so excited that I got approved SO quickly. I nearly screamed out loud at work when the email came through. 🙂

  36. Stephanie Once Upon a Chapter

That SUCKS that someone took your images and that you had to file a DMCA. 🙁 Sometimes people don’t understand what is okay and what isn’t. I’d like to think it was just inexperience but it isn’t always. I hope you don’t have to deal with it again.

Yeah. It made me feel ugly emailing all of these people. The book cover really made me mad, and I am glad the host site responded to my case.

    • kimbacaffeinate

Smart. I tend to make mine. I buy vector stocks and then play with picMonkey. My header image however was a custom job so that is another story.

  37. Kei

Oh I feel you! I’ve seen my pics on other blogs too! When I first started blogging I was shocked at all the stories about copyrights some blogs had to deal with, so now I just make my own stuff to be safe, I totally agree that people are not fully aware how google images work, just because it’s out there, doesn’t make it okay to use.

  38. Charlie

I am also hoping the image “borrowing” is chalked up to inexperienced bloggers. When I first started blogging, I had no idea. Over the years I’ve slowly learned a little bit more and more. I still don’t feel like I know 100% on the topic, but I am grateful to those who have shared sources to obtain free images that does not violate copyright infringement. I even have a bookmarks folder labeled Stock Images with 8 sites I can utilize. I rarely use them, but they are handy – and on the up and up – for when I need an image. I hope that last blog is slow on the emails like I have been recently. I hate to think someone intentionally is using your images. How does the DMCA process work? We need some posts on that topic!

    • kimbacaffeinate

It cost money to file a DMCA. Which is why I contacted site owner whenever possible. You actually submit the forms to the host site. Blogger, or web host. They take down site until they remove stolen image. The host quickly had the book cover taken down for which I am grateful. In most cases an email, followed my a comment on a post took care of issue.

  39. Angela

The total random put a smile on my face. ^_^ Hope you enjoy your book haul. Sorry about the images. It’s something that people should know, but don’t. oh that sounds like such a trial to have to deal with!!! I agree, there are quite a few sites where you can get free images. Even on my site, I always give credit to where I received the image, or where I received them from such as book covers and the like. I try to be careful. Love the Vodka image….totally made me laugh. I am more of a wine person myself,

  45. Tressa

That is terrible (both the stomach virus, which I am just getting over, and that some people have been using your image)! I’ve heard of others stealing images, but it’s not affected me yet. Or maybe it has and I don’t know. I need to actually update the copyright on my page. I’ll have to do that this week. I hope the rest of your week is better!

    • kimbacaffeinate

It is a form you submit to the hosting Blogger or, Godaddy etc. It is a former complaint form. They typically takedown site until they remove stolen image. My daughter recovered in less than 48 hrs. All are healthy now 🙂

  46. Bookworm Brandee

I’m sorry you had that happen, Kimberly – made the tequila quote even more funny! I hear about things like this and having your reviews plagiarized…hopefully it’s not happening to me because I’m clueless. I look forward to your post on images though. Hope you’ve been having a great week. I got back from Portland, where it was sunny and warm – flip-flop weather!! – to snow and an awful cold. Ugh! Luckily, since Wednesday was my ‘Monday’, it’s a short week. 😀

  47. Natalie

Wow that’s terrible about people using your images like that – especially for an ebook! Some people just don’t seem to understand copyright, it’s ridiculous :/ I’m glad most of them were responsive though, I hope the other one responds eventually!
