With the Experiment in Terror show finding some success, amateur ghost hunters Perry Palomino and Dex Foray embark on their most terrifying investigation yet. A tiny, fog-shrouded island in the rough strait between British Columbia and Washington State has held a dark secret for decades: it was a former leper colony where over forty souls were left to rot, die, and bury each other. Now a functioning campground, Perry and Dex spend an isolated weekend there to investigate potential hauntings-but as the duo quickly find out, there is more to fear on D'Arcy Island than just ghosts. The island quickly pits partner against partner, spiraling the pair into madness that serves to destroy their sanity, their relationship, and their very lives.

HORRIFIC Scary PAGETURNER freaky

DEAD SKY MORNING is the third book in Karina Halle’s Experiment in Terror series and lordy was it creeptastic. As we get to know the main characters and move into new cases, this series just keeps getting better. Turn on the lights and grab your earbuds!

This series follows the adventures of amateur ghost hunters Perry Palamino and Dex Foray as they investigate locations that exhibit paranormal activity for their online show. Dex is the mysterious older investigator with online exposure, and Perry we are discovering as the series progresses is sensitive to the paranormal world. Something happens at her parents home that freaked me out but had her family sharing knowing glances. I need to find out more!

In DEAD SKY MORNING,  they are camping for the weekend on a remote island located in the rough strait between British Columbia and Washington state. The island was once home to a leper colony where 40 people were left to die. Now a campground it is reported to be haunted. *Que the scary music and paranormal woo-woo*. They travel by boat to this fog shrouded island, where Halle takes us on a trippy, eerie and terrifying adventure.

How can I explain what happened and what I experienced listening to this? The island is creepy, and they are definitely NOT alone. As the two set up camp and begin to converse, their moods seem to alter. Perry who is more sensitive to the paranormal sees and hears things. They experience mood swings, shifts in reality, near death experiences and more. Think THE SHINING. Yep, creepy as hell. Halle has this way of building things up until suddenly you are terrified and outside noises have you jumping. The atmospheric setting and paranormal woo-woo soon have Dex and Perry not trusting each other as paranoia sets-in. For a moment I wondered if they would murder each other. It was brilliant.

The pace was fantastic, and while all this crazy stuff was happening, things are revealed about the characters. We learn some unsettling things about Perry’s past. Perry gets bold and asks Dex questions, even though she still assumes way too much. Dex isn’t an easy read and has some trouble dealing with Perry’s abilities, but we do learn some tidbits about him. These are characters that I both love and hate but find I cannot stop listening and rooting for them.

The mystery, like the others in this series, isn’t completely solved. It’s more of will they survive the experience or not. It gives an authenticity to these hauntings. Sometimes the paranormal activity cannot be explained, and some places are inherently evil.

Jo Rylan continues to narrate, and I think she brilliantly captures their personalities and the dark atmospheric tone. She skillful enhances the tension through tone and pacing. Rylan even manages to capture the sillier moments between Dex and Perry.

DEAD SKY MORNING and the Experiment in Terror series is perfect for fans of horror, ghostly tales, and mysteries.

Love the sound of this. I never read the author before, this looks like a good place to start.

  3. Kathy

I haven’t read from this author but I have some of her books. I didn’t realize she had a PNR series. I don’t like scary books but this does sound really good. I’ll have to check out the first book.

Yes, for almost the full six years I have been blogging fellow blogger have recommended them, and I finally did it when the audios published, lol

  4. Sam

I have only read Halle’s McGregor books, but this does sound really good. I haven’t started a new PNR series in a really long time either. Great review!

This is the one that scared me so bad that I couldn’t read it at night. It’s the one that I remember the best as well. Of course, the rest are spooky too, but something about that island about did me in. The novellas are good too if you ever have time. Glad you are liking the series-it’s still high on my list of favorite all time series.

Each book contains a single paranormal story, and I suppose one could, but the characters and overall arc might not be appreciated as much.

OMG my goose bumps have goose bumps Kim. This sounds really good, something I must only read/listen to on my morning walk, unless it’s foggy, rainy, misty etc… 😉 Okay it’s going on my if I’m brave enough list, but it also sounds like I need to go to the start. Right?
    Great recount wow.

I read the first book and liked it but I wasn’t in love with it. Maybe I should give book two another look if you loved the third so much Kim.

Sweet! I am glad you loved them too. Do you by any chance comment from two different IP addresses? Say like home and work? Half of your comments appear in my spam folder and the other half do not. It is so freaky weird.

Yes, I use two different laptops, one from my own laptop at home and the other from work. Sorry it confuses me. When I’m on the road sometimes I use the free wifi available or the internet from my cellphone.

I only tried a book by this author that I really enjoyed but I know I need to try more like this one!
